Re-listen to the game

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In the last Mid-American Conference game at Oestrike Stadium for the 2014 season, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered a 15-1 loss to Central Michigan University, May 11. The Eagles (17-33, 4-20 MAC) took an early 1-0 lead before the Chippewas (32-20, 17-7) rattled off 15 consecutive runs.

Along with celebrating Mother's Day, the Eagles also honored the military by wearing camouflage warm-ups and caps for Military Appreciation Day. A color guard took the field prior to the game, and two military servicemen threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Senior Sam Ott tallied three of the Eagles' four hits in a strong 3-for-4 day at the dish, also scoring EMU's lone run. The three-hit game was the third of the season for the EMU right fielder as well as the 19 multi-hit game of the 2014 campaign. Fellow senior Lee Longo improved his hitting streak to four games with a base hit that scored Ott in the first inning. On the bump, freshman Tyler Russell (0-3) suffered the loss by allowing seven runs on 10 hits in five innings.

CMU pounded 15 runs on 20 hits as five different Chippewas collected three hits apiece. Along with his three hits, Tyler Huntey score three times and knocked in four runs to lead the Central sluggers. He blasted a solo home run in the top of the ninth, and first baseman Zack Fields played long ball as well with a two-run shot. CMU starter Nick Deeg (4-4) earned the win by lasting seven innings and giving up just one run on three hits to go along with six strikeouts.

Eastern wasted no time taking their first lead of the series with one run in the bottom of the first. The Eagles used the "get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in" strategy Ott led things off with a base hit to right before John Rubino placed a bunt down the third base line to advance his teammate into scoring position for Longo. As he has done all season long, the MAC's leading hitter came through with a single up the middle to plate Ott and give EMU the 1-0 advantage after one inning of play. However, the lead was short-lived as the Chippewas tied the game in the second before adding another two runs in the third to claim a 3-1 cushion.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Central Michigan tallied 11 runs in the next three innings to break open the ballgame. Huntey's solo homer in the ninth brought the final margin to 14.

The Eagles will put a lid on the 2014 home campaign, hosting University of Notre Dame, May 13, in what will also be the final non-conference game of the season for the Green and White. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game can be heard live on Eagle All-Access.
