– The Eastern Michigan University baseball team completed its five-game road trip on the losing end of an 8-1 decision to Ohio State University Tuesday night, April 8, on Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Eagles (10-19) managed just three hits in the setback while the Buckeyes (19-13) chalked up their eight runs on 13 hits.

In just his second start of his career, freshman Sam Delaplane (0-1) held the OSU bats at bay through the first two innings, keeping the Buckeyes off the scoreboard. Delaplane got out of a bases-loaded in jam in the second inning, but Ohio State would get to the right-hander in the third for five runs to give the loss to the young Eastern arm. After an inning of relief from Ben Dartnell, freshman Tyler Russell pitched the final four innings of the contest, allowing just one run while striking out four Buckeyes.

Sam Ott collected two of the Eagles' three hits while also scoring EMU's only run on a sacrifice fly by Mitchell McGeein. One of Ott's hits was a double, the 46th of his career, tying Steve Bradshaw for fifth on the all-time list at Eastern Michigan. Catcher Adam Dennison recorded the other hit for the Green and White in a 1-for-3 performance. Defensively, Eastern was perfect in the field with an error-free ballgame.

OSU cleanup hitter Pat Porter led the Buckeyes at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored as well as a RBI. First baseman Ryan Leffel knocked in a team-high three runs to go along with a pair of hits and one run. On the mound, freshman southpaw Zach Farmer (5-3) tossed seven innings while allowing just one run on two hits to pick up the win.

After Ohio State tallied five runs in the third, the Eagles put up a number on scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Ott went opposite field for a double down the left field line to etch his name as one of the top-five doubles leaders in EMU history. The senior also showed his intelligence on the base path by swiping third to reach 90 feet away from home. With one out in the inning, McGeein hit a fly ball deep enough for Ott to tag from third and cross home plate, cutting the OSU lead to four. However, Eastern could not get another run as the Buckeyes added a pair in the bottom half of the inning to make it a six-run game, 7-1.

The Buckeyes added an insurance run in the eighth, and the Eagles went down in order in the ninth to fall by a seven-run margin.

Head Coach Jay Alexander and his ballclub return to the friendly confines of Oestrike Stadium for four games in consecutive days. The Eagles added a game to their schedule this week and will host Siena Heights in a Thursday evening contest, April 10, at 5 p.m. The non-conference matchup will set the stage for a three-game series against MAC West Division foe Northern Illinois, April 11-13. The Eagles and Huskies will battle under the lights in game one, April 11, at 6 p.m., before a Saturday afternoon affair, April 12, with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The series wraps up on Sunday, April 13, starting at 1 p.m.
