EMU Baseball Ends Losing Skid, Powering Past Siena Heights, 15-9

Eagles rally from down five to soar past the Saints and snap a six-game slide

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –The Eastern Michigan University baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak due to success at the plate with a 15-9 victory over Siena Heights University Thursday evening, April 10, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (11-19) overcame a five-run deficit and used 12 hits, 10 walks and two hit batters to rattle 15 runs off of eight Siena Heights (13-12) pitchers. The Saints picked up nine runs on 10 hits, putting up six runs in the top of the fourth.

John Rubino and Lee Longo recorded three hits and three RBI apiece to lead the EMU sluggers. Rubino also scored on three occasions while Longo crossed home twice. Austin Wilson, Sam Ott and Adam Sonabend chipped in as each knocked in two runs throughout the evening. Head Coach Jay Alexander's ballclub chalked up 11 combined runs in back-to-back innings, including seven in the bottom of the seventh.

Ott and Longo both doubled in the contest to move up the EMU all-time list. The 47th double of his career moved Ott into a tie for fourth in program history with Scott Barrett. Longo reached the top-five in career doubles with his 46th, placing the senior in a tie with Steve Bradshaw at number five in Eastern laurels.

Senior Zane Birchler started on the mound for the Green and White and lasted 3.1 innings before freshman Layne Gusler (1-0) pitched 3.2 innings of relief to pick up the first collegiate victory of his career. The hard-throwing righty, Kristian Calibuso, tossed the final two innings of the game without allowing a hit or a run.

Siena Heights first baseman Joe Williams smashed three doubles that led to three RBI. The Saints also saw three hits out of leadoff hitter Dan Muller, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Kyle Burkholder (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits and a pair of walks in just 0.2 inning.

The Eagles struck first with three runs in their opening appearance at the plate. Wilson and Rubino walked before Longo's double to right field brought the two Eagles around to score. With two outs in the inning, Michael Mioduszewski did not leave Longo stranded as a single to right brought the senior across the dish.

Siena Heights scored for the first time in the top of the third as three hits led to a pair of runs. Trailing by one, the Saints kept their momentum going with six runs in the fourth. After giving up three runs, Birchler left the contest with the bases loaded, and Gusler could not get out of the jam as all three baserunners crossed the plate to give Siena Heights a five-run advantage, 8-3.

Longo recorded his third RBI of the game with a single in the fifth to cut the deficit to four. The Saints' lead only lasted one more inning as EMU tied the contest with four runs in the sixth. The Eagles were patient at the plate as five walks, including a RBI base on balls by Wilson, made it a three-run game and kept the bases load with just one out. Rubino came through for his team with a single through the right side that plated two of his teammates. Following the RBI trend, Ott's long flyout to right field scored Wilson to tie the game at eight.

Although Siena Heights answered with a run in the top of the seventh to re-gain the advantage, Eastern continued to ride the wave of momentum with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to claim the lead for good. In this inning, the EMU bats came alive with six different Eagles recording hits. Wilson, Ott and Sonabend all blasted RBI doubles in the huge inning as the Green and White batted around, sending 11 hitters to the plate. When the damage was done, EMU held a comfortable 15-9 lead with just two innings to play. Calibuso kept the Saints' bats at bay during the final stretch as the Eagles ended their losing streak with a six-run victory heading into the weekend.

Eastern Michigan will look to build off the victory as Northern Illinois University comes to town for a Mid-American Conference West Division series, April 11-13. First pitch of Friday's game, April 11, is scheduled for 6 p.m. under the lights of Oestrike Stadium.
