EMU Bats Rally From Down Five Before Suffering Walk-Off Loss to Ball State

Sam Ott propelled the comeback, going 3-for-4 with three RBI
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Trailing by five through the first six innings, the Eastern Michigan University scored two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the ballgame. Nonetheless, a double by Ball State University's Sean Godfrey in the bottom of the ninth scored a fellow Cardinal to score as the Eagles (10-18, 1-8) could not complete the comeback, falling 6-5 against the Mid-American Conference foe Sunday afternoon, April 6.
Senior right fielder Sam Ott tied a season high with three RBI, going 3-for-4 and proving to be the main factor in the Eagles' comeback to tie the game. Ty Gilmore, Lee Longo and Austin Wilson all picked up multi-hit days at the plate with two hits apiece. As a team, the Green and White pounded 13 hits, four more than the Cardinals on the afternoon. Moved back in the rotation, Jake Andrews pitched the first five innings of the game and allowed three runs (two earned) on only two hits. Taking the loss was Charlie Land (0-5), who surrendered three runs on seven hits in the final 3.1 innings before Godfrey's double ended the contest.
Godfrey capped off a memorable weekend at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance, while teammate Sean Kennedy went 3-for-4 along with knocking in a pair of runs for Ball State (22-10, 7-1 MAC). Only two other Cardinals were able to muster a hit off of EMU pitching. Eastern was able to hit the ball against BSU starter Zach Plesac by collecting seven hits, but the Cardinal allowed just one run in over six innings of work. Picking up the win with a scoreless ninth inning was reliever Jacob Brewer (3-1).
The Eagles busted out seven hits in the first six innings, but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. After the first two EMU sluggers flied out to begin the game, the Green and White tried to get things going with two outs as a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases. However, the three Eagles were stranded on the base path, unable to cross the plate.
Meanwhile, Ball State scored twice in the first, due to a combination of a single and one error, before adding on three in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. With the bases filled with Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth, Kennedy scored two of his teammates on a RBI single. T.J. Weir added a base hit as well to plate another as Ball State continued to increase its lead.
Eastern finally ended the scoring drought with two runs in the top of the seventh, starting the comeback. Ott delivered a two-out double that scored Rubino before crossing the plate on a single by Longo, cutting the difference to three, 5-2.
EMU continued to build momentum, tying the game in the eighth with three runs. Rotola singled to start the inning but two quick outs seemed to have ended the threat; however, that was not the case as back-to-back singles started a two-out rally. Wilson's single to center scored Rotola to get the Eagles within two. Then, Ott came through in the clutch once again with a single that brought Wilson and Gilmore across to score, knotting the contest at five. Rubino advanced to third, putting runners on the corners for Longo and giving the senior an opportunity to give his team the lead for the first time in the series. Yet, a ground ball to second did not get the job done, and the game remained tied.
The Eagles kept Ball State off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, but could not keep the momentum going into the ninth. After EMU went quietly in its final appearance at the dish, Ryan Spaulding represented the winning run on base with a single to right field. Godfrey followed with a double that brought Spaulding around to score and allow the Cardinals to hold on for the win.
EMU will conclude its five-game road trip with a mid-week contest, April 8, against Ohio State University. First pitch from Columbus, Ohio is set for 6:35 p.m., and the game will be broadcast over the airwaves of Eagle All-Access. Veteran Voice of the Eagles Chad Bush will have the play-by-play while Greg Steiner will provide the analysis for the free audio edition of EMU Baseball on Eagle All-Access.
