Box Score.
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University tennis team knocked off the University of Toledo for just the second time in its last nine matches Saturday, April 5, at the UT Varsity Courts. The Eagles (12-6, 5-0 MAC) swept in the doubles, while splitting the singles matches to defeat the Rockets (12-5, 3-2 MAC).
Eastern started doubles play with a clean sweep. At No. 2 and 3, the Green and White cruised to 8-4 wins. Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero dispatched Katelyn Nguyen and Pia Rygh, while Zsofia Biro and Mariya Toncheva took down Lauren Thai and Mackenzie Bowman. At No. 1, Klara Supejova and Nino Mebuke had a more difficult time with Emily Mazzola and Lexy Pitt. However, the reigning back-to-back Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week held on to an 8-7 victory.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Eagles used victories at No. 1, 2 and 6, to bring home EMU's fifth straight victory. Supejova made quick work of Nguyen at No. 1, dispatching the Rocket 6-4, 6-2. As the reigning MAC Singles Player of the Week, Davitaia sent Chrissy Coffman packing with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Biro earned another deciding victory by taking down Bowman, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot. Mebuke and Toncheva saw losses and No. 3 and 4, while Daphne Friedrichs was unable to match Toledo's Mazzola, falling in the five spot.
"We beat a good team today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We caught some opponents that played strongly in singles, but managed enough wins, as the doubles play was key today. We have a tough weekend at home next weekend. We are looking forward to it."
The Eagles host reigning MAC Tournament Champions, Miami University, Friday, April 11, at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex. It will be the Eagles Unite match for the tennis season where EMU student-athletes are encouraged to come watch the Eastern tennis squad. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
