EMU Baseball Rallies Past Madonna, 11-7, for Milestone Home Victory

Eagles score 11 unanswered runs to win the program's 500th game on the field of Oestrike Stadium
The EMU sluggers continued to swing hot bats as six of the team's 13 hits went for extra bases. John Rubino went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a solo homer in the sixth inning to snap a 25-game homerless streak for the Green and White. Prior to Rubino's round-tripper, Mitchell McGeein was the last Eagle to go deep, smacking two home runs against Northern Kentucky, March 14. After going 5-for-6 against Ohio, April 27, Rubino is now 7-for-10 at the plate in the past two games, both EMU victories.
Lee Longo tripled for the third time in his career as part of a two-hit day. Ty Gilmore, Marquise Gill and Dae Bowden also added a pair of hits apiece. Gilmore and Gill both knocked in two teammates, while Michael Mioduzewski knocked in a team-high three runs. Eight of the nine Eagles in the starting lineup collected at least one hit as the entire flock of Eagles found a way to reach base.
Eastern held the Madonna bats at bay with just three hits. The freshman duo of Layne Gusler and Sam Delaplane (1-1) did not surrender a Crusader hit in 4.1 combined innings pitched, walking two and striking out four. Delaplane pitched what ended up being the final two innings of the game to perfection without allowing a baserunner.
Ryan Lech led the Crusaders at the plate by going 1-for-2 with two RBI. On the mound, Dylan Cooper (1-3) took the loss as the Eagles pegged the MU reliever for four runs in one inning. Madonna starter Even Piechota gave up six runs on nine hits in five innings.
The Eagles found themselves down 4-0 after the top of the first despite not allowing a hit. Kristian Calibuso struggled to find the strike zone, walking three Crusaders and allowing a run to score on a wild pitch. One EMU error proved costly, leading to three runs.
Madonna played add-on in the third as its first three hits of the game brought three more across the plate to make it a 7-0 game. However, EMU responded with three runs of its own to bring the deficit back to four, 7-3. Bowden doubled with one out before scoring on another two-out base knock by Longo. After an Ott stolen base that allowed both runners to advance into scoring position, Mioduszewski plated both Eagles on a hard liner up the middle.
Two innings later, Eastern cut the margin to one with three more runs in the fifth. Longo started the inning with a triple to the right center gap before heading home on sacrifice fly by Mioduszewski. Tony DiLeo walked and Gilmore placed down a perfect bunt for a single to put runners on the corners for Gill. The EMU shortstop quickly cleared the bases a double to deep left field to shrink the Madonna lead, 7-6.
Rubino played long ball in the sixth, blasting a hanging breaking ball over the left field fence to knot the game at seven. The home run gave the Eagles all the momentum they needed as the Green and White added four run in the bottom of the seventh. DiLeo doubled to the gap in left center to kick off the inning, while McGeein found a hole in the left side of the infield and advanced to second on the throw home. With two ducks on the pond, Gilmore ripped a double past the Madonna first baseman down the right field line to score DiLeo and McGeein, giving Eastern its first lead of the ballgame. EMU did not stop there, bringing two more runs across the plate for the 11-7 victory.
As the teams warmed up to start the eighth inning, lightning struck in the area; following a quick meeting of the minds, the umpires and coaches decided to call the game after seven innings of play.
Eastern Michigan returns to the friendly confines of Oestrike Stadium tomorrow, April 30, in search of its 501st victory at the 44-year old stadium. The Eagles will host Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green State University in a rare non-conference matchup between two MAC institutions. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
