Women's Golf Moves Up to Finish Third at MAC Championships

FISHERS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite firing a final round 322, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team moved up a spot to finish in third-place at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship with a three-day cumulative score of 938 (314-302-322). Kent State University captured its 16th consecutive league title, finishing at 31-over par 895 (296-299-300) on the par-72, 6,102 yard Hawthorns Golf and Country Club course.
After leading the tournament after 36-holes of play, EMU redshirt-sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) finished in fourth place with a 10-over 226 (73-72-81). It marked her first career top-10 showing as she picked up All-Tournament accolades for her effort. Meanwhile junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) tied for 11th with a 232 (76-76-80).
Battling windy conditions, Kent State University's Jennifer Ha became the third two-time winner in league history. Ha recorded a 222(79-69-74) to finish ahead of teammates Natalie Goodson (75-74-74=223) and Wad Phaewchimplee (72-77-75=224).
Kent State entered the day with a 12-stroke lead and gradually grew its advantage to a 21-stroke margin over the University of Toledo. The Rockets' Nicole Hollingsworth was named MAC Coach of the Year and the Golden Flashes' Ha earned MAC Golfer of the Year. KSU's Phaewchimplee was named MAC Freshman of the Year and Sarah Westaway of Ball State earned MAC Sportswoman of the Year accolades.
The Golden Flashes (895) were followed by UT (916), EMU (938) and Northern Illinois (945). While Akron (953), Western Michigan (953), Ohio (955), Bowling Green (959) and Ball State (962) rounded out the team standings.
For the tournament, four of the five Eagles ranked in the top 25, including senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada -Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) who finished tied for 22nd with a 240 (81-79-80). A second-team All-MAC selection, freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) also posted a 240 (84-75-81) for 22nd-place, as redshirt-junior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) rounded out the lineup with a 249 (84-83-82) for 40th.
Head Coach Sandy Wagner and the rest of the Eagles will now await the announcement of the teams that will participate in the three NCAA regional championships. That announcement will be made April 28 on national television via Golf Channel.
