Hillsdale Results
PHILADELPHIA, Pa./HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)-- Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team took part in four events between the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and the Penn Relay Carnival in Philadelphia, Pa., finding success at both venues on April 24.
The day's schedule started off in Michigan, when three athletes started their first day of the decathlon. At the end of the day, Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview) holds the overall lead with 3,694 points after setting personal records in nearly every event except the high jump, in which he matched his personal-best of 1.95 meters/6 feet 4.75-inches. Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) holds the third spot in the rankings with 3,422 points, while David Papenhagen (White Lake, Mich.-Lakeland) sits in eighth.
Waldron won two of the five events, claiming the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters/22 feet 2.25-inches and the shot put after throwing 12.55 meters/41 feet 2.25-inches. Selvig took the title in the 400m dash, running a personal-best 50.53 and finished runner-up in both the 100m dash and shot put. With the point totals from the first five events, Waldron holds a comfortable 150-point margin over Hillsdale's Justin Fawley.
Competition ended at Hillsdale with a late running of the 5000m, in which three Eagles notched personal-best marks. Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline) paced the Green and White, crossing the line at 15:29.00 and was followed by William Trice (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) and Clay Strycker (New Lothrop, Mich.-Westfield) in 15:41.16 and 15:46.29, respectively.
At the 120th running of the Penn Relays, three Eagles competed on the track for the evening. Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) started things off in the Keystone State with an eighth-place overall finish in the 3000m steeplechase, which was a combination of the championship and college heats. After the championship competitors were separated into their division, Smith's mark boosted him to a winning time in the college division. The junior finished in 9:05.43, recording his second qualifying mark for the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships in the event. In another late-night event, Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium) and Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College) withstood the laborious 10,000m run. Bouchikhi finished 16th in 30:24.32, while Dixon came close to his personal-best mark after crossing the line in 31:21.47.
The Eagles will continue with competition at the Hillsdale Gina Relays tomorrow, April 25, when the decathletes will finish their slate beginning at 9 a.m. Also gaining an early start on competition will be the members of the Green and White at the Drake Relays. The first scheduled event for Eastern is the 110m hurdles, slated for 9:45 a.m. CT. Live results will be available via deltatiming.com.
