BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) fired a final round 77 en route to second-place finish individually as well as leading the EMU women's golf team to a second-place showing at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, April 12-13, on the par-72, 5,960-yard Stone Ridge Golf Club. Battling very windy conditions, Murphy improved from fifth place to finish with a total score of 152 (75-77). Her 36-hole mark equaled her career-low set at The Preview, Oct. 7-8, 2013, and it was also her second career top-10 showing.
With the wind causing havoc for the entire tournament field on Sunday, junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) took 14th-place with a two-day total of 159 (76-83). Senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) was the Eagle to finish inside the top 20, posting a 161 (77-84) for a 19th-place tie.
Ball State University held on to win the two-round team championship with a combined score of 628 with rounds of 304 and 324 over the weekend of play. Eastern Michigan edged fellow Mid-American Conference member Bowling Green State University by four strokes to take second-place overall with a combined team score of 633 (305-328).
BGSU's Lily Bartell carded a tournament field low round score of 75 to earn medalist honors with her first-place finish. Bartell was able to jump from sixth-place to first-place overall with her combined 36-hole score of 151. Coupled with her first round 76, Bartell was able to surpass both Murphy and Sydney MacDonald of South Dakota State who each finished tied for second-place.
Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario-St. Augustine Secondary) and Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) finished with scores of 165 (77-88) and 165 (81-84), respectively, to round out the golfers competing for EMU.
Competing as an individual, Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) finished in 82nd position (89-87=176).
Eastern Michigan has one week off before traveling to Fishers, Ind. for the Mid-American Conference Championships, April 25-27, at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club.
