Germaine, Joseph and Pizzuto Earn NCAA Berths at MAC Championships

Eagles place sixth, MIssouri claims second-straight MAC Championship
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Three Eastern Michigan University wrestlers, redshirt-seniors Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) and Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) as well as redshirt-sophomore Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton), earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships Sunday, March 9, at the Mid-American Conference Championships. As a team, the Eagles placed seventh with a total of 57.5 points.
The University of Missouri grabbed its second-straight conference championship after rallying on day two of the tournament, totaling 118.5 team points with two individual champions. After coming into the tournament with an unscathed record, Northern Iowa was unable to close out the season with a MAC Championship, despite grabbing 116 team points and a league-best four individual titles.
After falling behind, 4-2, in the first period of the finals, Germaine battled back in the second two minutes to knot the score at 6-6 heading into the final period. The redshirt-senior was unable to hold off No. 3 Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa, falling in a 10-7 decision. With the runner-up finish, Germaine clinched his second NCAA berth, going 2-1 in his final MAC Championship donning the Green and White.
Joseph punched the ticket to his third-straight NCAA Championships with a third-place finish at the MAC Championships. The Lapeer, Mich. native went 2-0 on the final day of the tournament first earning an 8-2 decision over Ryan Garringer of Ohio before taking Craig Kelliher of CMU in a 5-2 decision.
Pizzuto secured his first career NCAA Tournament berth with a fifth-place finish at the MAC Championships. The redshirt-sophomore fell to No. 14 Mackenzie McGuire of Kent State in a 4-2 decision in the wrestleback bracket sending him to the fifth-place match against No. 18 Matt Manley of Missouri. Pizzuto defeated Manley for the second time this season with a 6-2 decision.
In his first MAC Championship appearance, Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) picked up a sixth-place finish at 157 lbs., while Michael Shaw (Bangor, Mich.-Allegan) and Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) secured sixth-place spots in their respective weight classes.
The NCAA Championships will take place March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
