Redshirt-seniors Jared Germaine and Phillip Joseph both posted 1-1 records on day one of the championships
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla (EMUEagles.com) – Two Eastern Michigan University wrestlers remain in the NCAA Division I National Championships at the conclusion of day one, March 20. Redshirt-seniors Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) and Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) each went 1-1 on day one to remain in the championships, while Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Milton) and Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) saw their 2013-14 seasons come to a close.
Germaine was the only Eagle to grab a victory in the first round of action at the championships as he opened up the day with his third pin of the postseason and the fifth of his senior campaign. No. 7 Bradley Taylor of Wisconsin got out to the 2-0 lead over Germaine before the Saginaw, Mich. native used a quick escape and a pin just 46 seconds into the bout to advance to the second round of the championships.
In the second round, No. 10 David Terao of American grabbed a 5-3 lead over Germaine in the first period with a final second controversial takedown. The redshirt-senior battled in the second period, allowing only one takedown and knotting the score at 7-7 heading into the final two minutes of action. Terao took the lead for the second time in the bout, but Germaine again knotted the score at 11-11 as the clock wound down. Terao clinched one final escape and secured the riding time point to earn a narrow 13-11 decision and send Germaine to the wrestleback bracket.
Joseph and No. 6 Jacob Swartz of Boise State were unable to gain any advantage over the other in the first period as the two headed into the second with the score knotted at 0-0. Swartz, the three-time Pac 12 champion, was the first to notch a point with an escape in the second before using a takedown and near fall to get out to the 6-0 advantage. With less than a minute to go in the bout, Swartz extended his lead to 13-3 to grab the major decision over Joseph.
After falling in his first bout of the day, Joseph came back with a vengeance in the wrestleback bracket against Austin Morehead of Oregon State. The redshirt-senior used four takedowns and a near fall to get out to a 14-3 lead in the first period before adding two more takedowns and a pair of near falls to grab a 20-5 technical fall and continue his run in the tournament.
Pizzuto did not fair as well as his teammate in the first round of the tournament, falling to No. 13 Cody Brewer of Oklahoma by a technical fall. The North Jackson, Ohio native saw his season come to an end in his second bout of the day when he fell to James Guilbon of Penn State in a 10-2 major decision. The redshirt-sophomore closed out his first 20-win season with a 20-11 overall record for Eastern Michigan.
Zeerip was unable to keep pace with No. 7 Brian Realbuto of Cornell in his first bout of the day as Realbuto grabbed a 13-3 major decision over the Fremont, Mich. native. In his second bout of the day, Zeerip went up against Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers. Zeerip and Perrotti went back-and-forth through the first two periods with Zeerip holding a slight 8-6 edge heading into the final two minutes of the bout. Perrotti used a big third period to take the 13-8 decision over Zeerip. The Fremont, Mich. native closed out his first season donning the Green and White with a 20-16 record and will return for a sixth year in the 2014-15 campaign.
Germaine and Joseph will be back in action Friday, March 21 for day two of action at the NCAA National Championships. Wrestling is set to start at 11 a.m. Germaine will take on Kory Mines (24-11) of Edinboro, while Joseph is set to wrestle Victor Avery (25-7), also of Edinboro.
