Wrestling Wraps Up Competition at NCAA Championships

Joseph and Germaine each posted 1-2 showings in Oklahoma City, Okla.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University wrestlers Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) and Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) each finished with a 1-2 record at the 2014 NCAA Division I National Championships at the Chesapeake Energy Center, March 21.
 
Kory Mines of Edinboro was the first to get on the scoreboard in the 125 lb. weight class with an early takedown before Germaine used an escape to come within one. The Saginaw, Mich. native took the lead with a takedown and extended his lead to 5-2 with a near fall. Germaine tacked on one final near fall to close out the first period, going up 8-2 over Mines.
 
Starting down in the second period, Germaine grabbed an escape allowing him to take the 9-2 advantage but Mine fought back with a takedown and grabbed the pin at 3:40 to advance in the wrestleback bracket.
 
Germaine closed out his senior campaign with a 20-4 record and a 95-43 career record. The Saginaw, Mich. native's 95 career wins ranks him fifth in EMU laurels. Germaine posted 12 decisions, two major decisions and four pins, including three postseason pins to finish his career donning the Green and White along with two National Championship appearances.
 
Joseph was the first to strike against Victor Avery of Edinboro with an early takedown but Avery used an escape and a counter takedown to take the 3-2 lead. Starting down in the second period, Avery grabbed an escape and a takedown to extend his lead to 6-2 before Joseph clinched an escape to come within three. A final second takedown from Avery allowed him to take an 8-3 lead heading into the final two minutes of action. Joseph continued to battle in the third period with two escapes and a quick takedown but it was not enough as Avery earned an 11-7 victory over Joseph.
 
Joseph ended his senior season with a team-high 24 wins to cap off his third 20-win season for the Green and White. The Lapeer, Mich. native posted an 85-51 career record, ranking seventh all-time in Eastern wrestling history. Joseph tallied 14 decisions, four major decisions and three pins for EMU in his final season, along with three career National Championship appearances.
 
In team scoring, the Eagles finished with five points, which after Session III, was good for 39th-place overall. Penn State leads the field with 60 team points, while Minnesota is in second with 58 points.
