Germaine Headed to the Finals After Day One of the MAC Championships

EMU is currently in sixth-place after day one of the MAC Championships
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad is sixth overall after day one of the 2014 Mid-American Confernce Wrestling Championships on the campus of Kent State. The Eagles grabbed 50 points on the first day of the championships, while Northern Iowa currently leads the field with 97 total points.
No. 27 Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) found his way to the 125 lb. championship round, going 2-0 on the day. The Saginaw, Mich. native pinned Max Soria of Buffalo in 4:56 in the quarterfinals before picking up his fourth pin of the season over No. 19 Brandon Jeske of Old Dominion at 3:47. With the wins, Germaine punched his ticket to Oklahoma City, Okla.,March 20-22 for the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships and will look to become the first Eagle to become the first individual MAC Champion since John McClure accomplished the feat in 2009. The redshirt-senior will take on No. 3 Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa in the final. The finals will feature Peters, who was ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in the conference at 125 lbs. heading into the tournament, while Germaine was ranked at No. 2.
Redshirt-sophomore Michael Shaw (Bangor, Mich.-Alegan), who was ranked seventh in the MAC at 141 lbs entering the day, fought his way into day two of the championships. The Bangor, Mich. native grabbed a 6-1 decision over Tyler Argue of Northern Illinois to get into the quarterfinals before falling to No. 2 Chris Mecate of Old Dominion. Shaw won his first round in the wrestleback bracket, taking down No. 17 Tyler Small of Kent State in a 6-3 decision to remain in the fight for a third-place overall finish.
Four EMU wrestlers produced 1-1 records on day one of the championships and will continue to compete in the wrestleback bracket on day two of the tournament. Redshirt-sophomore Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) grabbed a narrow 5-4 decision at 133 lbs. in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals to No. 10 Joe Roth of Central Michigan, while No. 22 Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) fell in his first bout of the day before clinching a 5-4 decision over Jarrett Jenson of UNI.
Pizzuto and Zeerip will both take on nationally-ranked opponents to kick off day two as Pizzuto will grapple with No. 14 Mackenzie McGuire of Kent State and Zeerip will wrestle No. 24 Tristan Warner of Old Dominion. Pizzuto came away with a 7-6 decision over McGuire earlier this season when the two tangled at Bowen Field House, Jan. 31, while Zeerip fell to Warner, 9-2, in their earlier matchup on Dec. 6.
Redshirt-seniors Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) and Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich-Dearborn) also posted 1-1 records for the Eagles on day one of the tournament with Joseph earning a 5-2 decision over Caleb Busson of NIU and Hoballah grabbing a 9-0 major decision over James Benjamin of UB after falling to No. 28 Blaize Cabell of UNI in the quarterfinals. Joseph will go up against Ryan Garringer of Ohio in the wrestleback bracket on Sunday and look to make his third-straight NCAA appearance, while Hoballah will wrestle Matt Tourdat in the wrestlback bracket.
Four Eages concluded the 2013-14 campaign as Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) and James Klosz (Parma, Ohio-Holy Name) each captured major decisions before falling twice in their respective weight classes. Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) was unable to grab a victory at 174 lbs. for the Green and White, while redshirt-senior Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) concluded his career at EMU, falling twice at 197 lbs. Whitenburg posted a 778-42 all-time record for the Eagles with a 10-9 record in his final season donning the Green and White.
Eastern will conclude the 2014 MAC Championships Sunday, March 9 with the third-place bouts set to start at noon. The finals will start at 1:20 p.m.
