Baseball suffers a doubleheader defeat, 10-5; 6-0, to Akron on the road
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a pair of Mid-American Conference contests at the hands of the University of Akron Zips, Saturday afternoon, March 22. The Eagles (8-11, 0-3 MAC) fell, 10-5, in game one of the doubleheader before being shutout for the first time this season, 6-0, in the finale of the twinbill against Akron (10-10, 3-0 MAC) at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Game One: Akron 10, Eastern Michigan 5
EMU scored five runs on 10 hits in the first contest as eight different Eagles recorded a hit. Sam Ott was the lone Eastern slugger to notch two hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. The Eagles trailed by three through six innings, but tied the game with a trio of runs in the seventh. However, the Zips were able to get five runs off of Charlie Land (0-4) to take the 10-5 victory.
UA right fielder Joey Havrilak had a huge game for his team by tallying four hits, three runs and two RBI. Brady Stewart also added hit to go along with knocking in three runs for the Zips. Zach Beaver (2-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.
After Akron took the lead with a run in the bottom on the first, the Eagles countered with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back singles by Mitchell McGeein and Adam Sonabend allowed Michael Mioduszewski to advance both Eagles into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, two straight singles plated the two runners as Adam Dennison and Nick Rotola recorded base hits to give Eastern the early advantage.
The Zips scored two runs in both the third and fifth before the Eagles roared back in the seventh with three runs. Mioduszewski smacked a base knock to right field to start the inning off before sneaking around to third on a pair of fielder's choices. After John Rubino reached via the fielder's choice, Austin Wilson was plunked by a pitch to load the bases. From there, Ott started the two-out rally with a single to the outfield that scored two of his teammates, cutting the deficit to one. Longo followed with an infield single to bring in Wilson, knotting the contest up at five.
Akron regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the inning. The home team added four insurance runs in the eighth that kept the game out of the grasp of the Green and White.
Game Two: Akron 6, Eastern Michigan 0
In the second game, the Eagles were kept off the scoreboard for the first time all season while also being held to a season-low two hits. Rubino and Ty Gilmore recorded the only two singles of the contest as Longo's 27-game on base streak came to an end. Despite the low amount of hits, EMU found other ways to reach base by walking seven times. Nonetheless, the Green and White could not get runners across the dish, leaving 10 Eagles on base throughout the nine-inning affair.
Steve Weber (1-1) started the game and recorded the first loss of his final season at EMU. A bright spot from the nightcap was sophomore reliever Michael Marsinek, who pitched six innings while surrendering four hits and two runs with only one of them being earned.
Three Zips recorded a pair of hits as Akron collected 11 in all, turning them into six runs. Also, six of UA's 11 hits went for doubles. UA starter Myles McVeigh (1-0) struck out nine Eagles in six innings, while allowing just one hit.
Akron scored three in the second and two in the third to take an early 5-0 lead. Eight hits were recorded in the two-inning stretch as Marsinek replaced Weber in the top of the third.
Perhaps the Eagles' best scoring opportunity came in the seventh as Head Coach Jay Alexander's ballclub loaded the bases. Eastern went back and forth in terms of walking and striking out as Tony DiLeo, Gilmore and Marquise Gill took a free pass with a pair of strikeouts in between those three hitters. However, the inning ended without a score due to a ground ball directly to the third where the UA third baseman stepped on the bag to prevent the threat.
Next week, the Eagles will hope to get back on the winning track and begin the 2014 home campaign at Oestrike Stadium. EMU is scheduled to play four home contests next week, beginning with Big Ten Conference opponent Northwestern, March 26, with a 3 p.m. first pitch. Eastern will conclude the week with a three-game series versus defending MAC regular season champion Kent State, March 28-30.
