ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (EMUEagles.com)—Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) was the lone representative of Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team at the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, March 15. The senior finished sixth in the nation to earn First Team All-American honors, breaking the school record for the third time this season with 4,229 points.
Chauchard set personal records four of her five events, claiming the top spot among the field in one event. The French native won the shot put with a throw of 13.32 meters/43 feet 8.50-inches, eclipsing her previous best mark by nearly two and a half feet.
The field was fiercely competitive in the 60m hurdles and high jump, in which Chauchard took 15th and 11th, respectively. Her time of 8.73 in the 60m hurdles barely edged out her previous best mark by .01 seconds, while she improved upon her high jump mark by one inch with a 1.70-meter/5-foot 7.00-inch leap. She also set a personal record in the long jump, taking ninth with a mark of 5.87 meters/19 feet 3.25-inches. To close out the competition, the senior took fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:18.23.
"Sarah is the ultimate competitor and she performed exactly the way I expected," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "Coach Jonathan Debogory has done a great job coaching her and we are incredibly pleased with her development this indoor season. We are very proud to have an EMU athlete on the podium for the Indoor Championships and we are excited to see what Sarah can do this coming outdoor season."
Chauchard surpassed her previous mark set just over two weeks ago, when she set the MAC Indoor Championship record, by 76 points. The score marks the second time in Chauchard's EMU career that she has eclipsed the 4,000-point mark.
The Eagles will be back in full force with the start of the outdoor season. The team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Raleigh Relays, March 29-30.
