The Eagles defeated Oakland University 6-1 before being shut out by IUPUI, 9-0
DAYTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split the final day of the Dayton Tournament, defeating Oakland University, 6-1, before being shut out by IUPUI, 9-0, Saturday, March 15.
Sophomores Abby Davidson and Abi Clark led the Eagles at the dish, each tallying three hits on the afternoon while Amanda Stanton had two RBI for the Green and White.
With the split, EMU moves to 7-15 overall on the season. Meanwhile, Oakland falls to 10-9 and IUPUI improves to 7-9.
Game One: Eastern Michigan 6, Oakland 1
The Eagles got the offense going in the top of the first when Davidson notched a two out single up the middle before Stanton singled to left field allowing Davidson to cross the plate.
The Green and White tacked on a second run in the top of the third inning when senior Lindsay Smith singled up the middle and Davidson picked up her second hit of the game with a double to the left center gap. Stanton forced a Grizzly error on a hard hit ball to the short stop as Smith scored an unearned run and extended the EMU lead to 2-0.
The trio combined for a third Eastern run in the top of the fifth inning when Smith and Davidson notched back-to-back singles and Stanton caused a second Oakland blunder to bring in Smith.
Eastern added a fourth run to the board when Lindsay Rich reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Davidson to cross home. With runners on first and third, Rich got in a pickle between second and third, which in turn allowed Stanton to steal home to give EMU the 4-0 advantage over OU.
Oakland put what would be its only run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning using a two out, two hit rally.
Eastern used one final run in the top of the seventh inning to snap a six-game losing skid when Aoife Duffy reached base on a third costly OU error after the Eagles put runners on base with a walk and a hit batter.
Davidson led the EMU offense with three hits and two runs, while Abi Clark had two hits and Stanton brought in two runs. Rich (3-7) went the distance in the circle allowing just two hits and tying a season-high seven strikeouts. Rich walked just two batters in her seven innings of work.
Balle Braunreuther hurled 4.2 innings for the Grizzlies, while Kaley Waalkes (6-2) suffered the loss pitching 2.1 innings of relief.
Game Two: IUPUI 9, Eastern Michigan 0
IUPUI scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the top of the second inning when three walks brought in a Jaguar run.
Eastern looked to get something going in the bottom of the third with two runners on, but IUPUI was able to retire the final out the inning before EMU could push a run across the plate.
Back-to-back round trippers in the top of the fourth inning extended the IUPUI lead to 4-0 before Alyssa Huntley came on in relief of Lauren Wells to retire the final out of the inning.
After the Eastern defense came up with a huge double play, Ali Mosier singled to left field to bring in the fifth Jaguar run in the top of the sixth inning.
IUPUI added four runs on five hits and one EMU miscue in the top of the seventh inning and retired the side in the bottom half of the inning to secure a 9-0 victory.
The loss marks the sixth time the Eagles have been shut out this season, while Eastern was out-hit 12-4, with four different EMU players tallying one hit apiece. Wells (1-6) took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings, while Huntley threw 2.2 innings of relief and Abbie Minsker had 0.2 innings of relief work.
Mosier led the IUPUI bats with two hits and five RBI, while sophomore Cassie Vodde hurled all seven innings for the Jaguars with three strikeouts, no walks and giving up only four hits.
The Eagles will be back in action in a mid-week road doubleheader against Youngstown State Tuesday, March 18. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
