The Eagles took home three wins in singles play

LAWRENCE, Kansas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped its third match of the season to Kansas University Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. Kansas barely knocked off the Eagles (6-3) by a 4-3 tally, as EMU won three of the six singles matches but were shutout on the doubles side.

Eastern dropped all three doubles matches, as Klara Supejova and Nino Mebuke were on the short end of a 6-4 decision at No. 1, while Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero fell at No. 2 by a 6-1 tally. Finally, Mariya Toncheva and Zsofia Biro were taken down 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

Singles play was a different story for EMU as the Eagles were able to take home three individual victories. Supejova won her match at No. 1-singles (7-5, 6-3) as the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year defeated Maria Jose Cardona. Davitaia and Mebuke fell in their No. 2 and 3 matches respectively, but Toncheva took down Paulina Los (6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (3)) in their No. 4-singles match. Daphne Friedrichs came up short (6-4, 6-0) to Claire Dreyer at No. 5, but Ribero was the final victor for Eastern (7-6 (1), 7-6 (3)), defeating Morgan Barnhill in the No. 6-singles match.

"This was a pretty heartbreaking loss today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray.  "We played with great energy and passion, but just fell a bit short.  We need to keep playing to our potential, and good things will happen this year."

Eastern is off until Friday, Feb. 14, when it travels to Lincoln, Neb. for a pair of contests. EMU will first take on the University of Nebraska Friday evening at 5 p.m. before squaring off with Illinois State University Saturday, Feb. 15, for a 3 p.m. matchup.
