DeLAND, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team dropped a match to Stetson University Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Eagles (6-6) were knocked off, 6-1, at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The match started with doubles action and Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero gave the Eagles a lead out of the gate by defeating Andrea Crespo and MayaBlue Stauffer-McDowell, 8-4, at the No. 2. However, the Hatters came back to win the next two matches. First, Diana Bukajeva and Isabella Fernandez took down Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova at No. 1, 8-6, before Zsofia Biro and Mariya Toncheva dropped an 8-3 decision to Lindsey Cable and Eveline Lepinay at No. 3, giving Stetson the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Toncheva was the only Eagle to pick up a victory in singles. She knocked off Stauffer-McDowell, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0, at the No. 4-singles position. Supejova fell in straight sets to Bukajeva, 6-1, 6-0, while Davitaia went to three sets, but fell, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, at the two spot. Mebuke dropped the three spot to Fernandez, 6-3, 6-2 and Daphne Friedrichs fell at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. Biro dropped her match to Cable, 7-5, 6-3.
"Despite this being our first outdoor match, playing a good team in their elements, I expect a better performance from our team," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We need to get back to playing at the highest of our potential, and keep a more even intensity level throughout our match. Tomorrow is another day, and I look for us to turn it around."
Eastern returns to the court tomorrow, Feb. 26, when it travels to Orlando, Fla. for a match with the University of Central Florida. The Eagles and Golden Knights square off at 2 p.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex.
