Softball Sweeps Day Two of FGCU Tournament

The Eagles took a 4-2 victory over Villanova before earning a 9-5 decision over North Dakota

FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team swept day two of the FGCU Tournament whenit defeatied Villanova University 4-2 before earning a 9-5 decision over the University of North Dakota Saturday, Feb. 22.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 4-4 overall on the season. Meanwhile, Villanova falls to 2-2 overall and North Dakota moves to 0-4 on the season.
The Green and White was led by freshman Katy Wyman (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Central) and senior Lindsay Smith (Seville, Ohio-Cloverleaf) who each tallied two RBI against Villanova, while junior Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) and senior Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) each had two hits against UND.
Game One: Eastern Michigan 4, Villanova 2
Back-to-back Wildcat singles and a walk loaded the bases before Brette Lawrence laced a two-out single through the infield to give Villanova the 1-0 lead. The Eagles had Chase Snell in a run down situation between third and home and secured the final out of the inning before the Wildcats could push another run across the plate.
Eastern found the spark it needed in the top of the fifth inning when Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) walked and Smith drove her first home run of the season over the left field wall to hand the Green and White the 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when a sacrifice fly to center field easily scored the runner from third base.
The Eagles answered back in the top of the sixth inning when freshman Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) reached base on a Wildcat miscue and Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) singled through the right side of the field. With runners in scoring position, Wyman dug into the box and lined a double through the right center gap to score two unearned runs for EMU.
Villanova tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh when two walks put the game-tying runs on the base path with only one out. Eastern shut down the Wildcat offense with back-to-back groundouts to the middle infielders.
Rich (2-1) clinched her second win of the season, throwing 6.1 innings with a season-high seven strikeouts, while freshman Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) grabbed her first collegiate save in 0.2 innings of relief work.
Kate Poppe suffered the loss for the Wildcats, pitching all seven innings with nine strikeouts and surrendering only one walk.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan 9, North Dakota 5
After leaving runners stranded in the first inning, Eastern broke open the scoreboard and capitalized in the second inning, scoring five runs on three hits and one error. Wyman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Wells knocked a single to left field and Smith walked to load the bases. Sophomore Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) caused a North Dakota miscue, scoring both Wyman and Wells to give EMU the 2-0 advantage.
The Green and White extended its lead to 3-0 when Lucas drove a double down the left field line. With two outs on the scoreboard, UND pitcher Megan Hedstrom threw a wild pitch that allowed Barnes to cross the plate for the Eagles' fourth run of the inning. EMU tacked on a third unearned run when senior Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill-Lockport Township) lined a single up the middle, scoring Lucas and causing North Dakota to make a pitching change to get the final out of the inning.
North Dakota got on the board in the top of the third inning when Amanda Johnson notched a two-out home run over the right field wall, bringing UND within four of the Eagles.
Eastern tacked on a sixth run in the bottom of the third inning when a lead off walk issued to Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) proved to be detrimental to the North Dakota defense. Davidson touched home when back-to-back errors from UND allowed the Westerville, Ohio native to make a trip around the bases and give EMU the 6-1 lead heading into the top of the fourth.
The Eagles used back-to-back doubles and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth inning to add three runs and take the 9-1 lead over UND. North Dakota fought off the mercy in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs on one hit and two EMU errors.
North Dakota continued to chip away at the Eastern lead in the top of the sixth scoring an unearned run on a single up the middle and added a fifth run in the top of the seventh, but was unable to close the gap, allowing Eastern to go on to a 9-5 victory and secure the day two sweep.
The Green and White used runs in three out of its six innings at the plate as it capitalized on nine hits and four UND errors.
Wells (1-1) picked up her first win of the 2014 season, throwing 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts, while Rich came in on relief for 2.2 innings. Barnes led EMU at the plate with two RBI, while Wells and Lucas each notched two hits in the contest.
Hedstrom suffered the loss for North Dakota pitching 1.2 innings, while Johnson led the UND offense with two hits, two runs and one RBI.
The Eagles will conclude the FGCU Tournament Sunday, Feb. 23 when they take on host Florida Gulf Coast at 3:45 p.m.
