CLEMSON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) — One night after upsetting nationally-ranked Clemson University to lift the lid on the 2014 campaign, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, 5-3, to the No. 16-ranked Tigers, Feb. 15. Both teams will head into the series finale at Doug Kingsmore Stadium with identical 1-1 records.
The Eagles tallied three runs on seven hits, but committed two errors. John Rubino and Lee Longo put together similar stat lines at the plate, each going 2-for-4 with an RBI. In his collegiate debut, freshman Sterling Sharp (0-1) picked up the loss after lasting 2.2 innings. The EMU starter allowed three runs on six hits while punching out a pair of Tigers.
Clemson scored five runs for the second straight game, but this time it was enough to down Eastern. Six of the Tigers' 10 hits came from the duo of Tyler Krieger and Steven Duggar as both went 3-for-4 at the palate. Kreiger added two RBI and Duggar recorded one of his own to help Clemson get the victory. On the mound, CU starting pitcher Matthew Crownover lasted five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits. He also punched out nine Eagles on the afternoon. Relieve Zack Erwin finished the game, pitching the last four innings and just surrendering one unearned run.
EMU struck first in its first opportunity at the plate. Rubino started the game off with a single through the right side of the infield before stealing two bases to get 90 feet away from scoring. However, the Eastern starting shortstop was thrown out at home on a Sam Ott ground ball to the first baseman. With Ott reaching safely on the fielder's choice, Crownover tried to pick off the senior Eagle, but threw the ball away to allow Ott to advance to second. On a full count, Longo sent Ott home with a single down the right field line to put a number on the scoreboard.
Sharp retired the side in the first before getting into trouble in the next two innings. The Tigers tallied three runs to force Sharp out of the ball game before the end of the third. Trouble started immediately in the bottom of the second as Duggar doubled to right field to lead off the inning. Three batters later, Jay Baum singled to bring around Duggar and tied the game at 1-1. Clemson added three hits and two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead as Ryan Lavoie had to enter the game to replace Sharp. The EMU reliever did his job, punching out Andrew Cox and leaving two Tigers stranded on base.
The Eastern defense was sloppy in the fourth, making two errors. While the miscues did not lead to any Clemson runs, the Tigers increased their advantage with an earned run off Lavoie. A single by CU's Weston Wilson and a Lavoie wild pitch set up an RBI single by Krieger as the Eagles found themselves trailing by the same 4-1 margin that they came back from in the season opener.
The Green and White got within a score with back-to-back runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Starting off the fifth, Ty Gilmore singled to center field, coming around to score two batters later on another Rubino single through the right side. In the top of the sixth, Longo doubled to right before crossing the plate due to Adam Dennison's single up the middle. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Clemson added an insurance run to lead by the final tally.
Erwin kept the EMU bats quiet in the last three innings as Ott was the only Eagle to reach base during the final stretch. Eastern went down in order in the ninth as Clemson denied another victory for the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan and Clemson will square off in the series' rubber match Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. Veteran EMU starting pitcher Paul Schaak will be on the mound for the Eagles while Clemson will send out junior Jake Long. Once again, the game can be seen live on ClemsonTigers.com.
