EMU Wrestling Set for Three Duals in Evanston

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- After taking a week break from the mats, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will travel to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the Northwestern Duals hosted by No. 16 Northwestern University. The Eagles will go up against Princeton, Cal Poly, and Drexel Saturday, Dec. 6 inside Walsh-Ryan Arena.
Since the 2005-06 season, Eastern has only tangled with Drexel, grabbing a 27-6 victory at the EMU Duals Nov. 16, 2013. The Northwestern Duals mark the first time EMU will wrestle Princeton and Cal Poly.
EASTERN CAPTURES EIGHT BOUTS AGAINST BLOOMSBURG: The Eagles captured eight of the 10 bouts over the Huskies with two pins and six decisions, including two shutouts, to run away with the 30-6 victory. Making his 2014-15 dual debut, redshirt-freshman Blake Caudill shut out Elliot Zackoski in a 2-0 decision to give the Eagles the early 3-0 lead, but Bloomsburg knotted the score in the 133 lb. bout. Following the setback, EMU took the next five bouts to take a 24-3 advantage heading into the final three rounds of action. Eastern captured two of the next three bouts en route to a 30-6 victory over the Huskies.
GREEN AND WHITE EARNS THIRD AT KEYSTONE CLASSIC: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team had nine grapplers place in the top-eight to secure a third-place team finish at the Keystone Classic Sunday, Nov. 23. Northwestern took the overall title, scoring 98 points, while Rider placed second oveall with 92.5 points. The Eagles rounded out the top-three with 89 overall points to finish just one point ahead of the Univeristy of Pittsburgh.
Sophomore Shayne Wireman represented the Eagles at 125 lbs., making his way into the finals and securing the fourth tournament placing of his young career. The Lansing, Mich. native won three-straight matches, including a 16-6 major decision over Elliot Zackoski of Bloomsburg in the opening round of competition, before falling to Dom Forys of Pitt in a 4-0 decision to take home a second-place finish.
Both Nicholas Barber and Brandon Zeerip earned fourth-place finishes in their respective weight classes as both fell into the consolation bracket early. The Green and White also saw two EMU grapplers place fifth in their respective weight classes as Austin Geerlings and Mike Curby both had a successful day on the mat.
Finally, the Green and White had four grapplers place sixth at the Keystone Classic to wrap up a third-place team finish as Anthony Abro, Gage Hutchison, Devan Marry, and Vincent Pizzuto each earned spots on the podium.
SPRINGER GRABS THIRD PODIUM FINISH OF THE SEASON: Transfer Kyle Springer has been the lone Eagle grappler to wrestle in both the Simpson Open, Nov. 22, and the Mat Town Tournament, Nov. 30, earning third-place finishes in both appearances.
In his second tournament as an Eagle, Springer placed seventh at the EMU Open before traveling to two different tournaments without the rest of the Green and White squad.
The New Boston, Mich. native worked his way into the semifinals at the Simpson Open before falling in a 4-1 decision to end up in the consolation bracket but came back to win two-straight bouts to capture the third-place finish.
Last weekend, the sophomore transfer added five more wins to his already impressive season at EMU. After dropping his second bout of the day at the Mat Town Tournament, Springer came back to win four-straight en route to his second third-place finish in a two-week span.
SCOUTING PRINCETON: Saturday's duals will be the first of the season for Princeton University and also the first time EMU and the Tigers have squared off on the mats. Princeton has competed in three tournaments thus far, including a second-place finish at the Navy Classic, Nov. 22.
The Tigers are led by No. 11 Abram Ayala, who won the Navy Classic after knocking off two wrestlers ranked in the top-15 of the 197 lb. weight class. Sophomores Brett Harner and Jordan Laster both burst onto the scene in their freshman seasons, ranking as the top-two with 28 and 23 wins, respectively. This season, both grapplers found their way into the finals at the Navy Classic to earn second-place finishes, while Harner won the 184 lb. title at the Binghampton Open, Nov. 9.
A LOOK AT CAL POLY: The Mustangs of Cal Poly are looking for their first dual win of the season at the Northwestern Duals after falling in their first four duals of the year.
Dominic Kastl leads the Mustangs with a 4-1 overall record and an unblemished 4-0 record in duals at 174 lbs., while Nicholas Johnson (HWT) and Colt Shorts (157 lbs.) each hold 2-2 dual records in their respective weight classes. Colton Schilling is the only Cal Poly grappler to post double-digit wins in the 2014-15 season as he holds a 10-4 overall record, but has yet to see any dual action at 141 lbs. meanwhile Travis Berridge has a 9-5 overall record but has struggled in dual action with a 1-3 record as the Mustangs' 165 lb. representative.

Matthew Cimato and Noel Blanco both earned fifth-place finishes at the Keystone Classic for the Dragons in their respective weight classes, while Franco Ferraina is the only other Drexel grappler to earn a win in dual competition.
THIS SEASON AGAINST DREXEL: Six Eagle wrestlers faced off with grapplers from Drexel at the Keystone Classic Sunday, Nov. 23. First, Brandon Zeerip pinned Noel Blanco in 51 seconds in the 157 lb. weight class before the Dragons picked up a win from Nick Elmer, who earned a 4-3 decision over Derek Davison at 165 lbs. Eastern earned its second win of the day over a Drexel wrestler when Devan Marry pinned Elmer just 18 seconds into the second period before Michael Curby secured a 7-5 sudden victory over Alex DeCiantis at 184 lbs.
The Green and White saw two final victories over the Dragons when Anthony Abro posted a 4-2 sudden victory over Brandon Litten at 197 lbs., and Gage Hutchison garnered a 6-3 decision over Joey Goodhart in the heavyweight division.
UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The Eagles continue life on the road Saturday, Dec. 13 when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the Cleveland State Open.
