Abro Picks Up Two Wins on Day Two of Midlands Championships

The Canton, Mich. native earned two-straight decisions on day two of the tournament
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team capped off its final tournament of the 2014 calendar year at the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Ryan-Walsh Arena on the campus of Northwestern University.
The Eagles earned a total of 24 points, which marks the second-highest point total in Green and White wrestling history as EMU earned 26.5 points in the 2011-12 campaign. As a team, Eastern placed 21st overall, while Iowa took home the crown for the second-straight season 173 points. Illinois place second overall with 125.5 points, while Northwestern rounded out the top three with 103 points.
Three Eagle grapplers picked up wins on day two of the tournament as Anthony Abro picked up two wins in the 197 lb. weight class and Jacob Davis and Brandon Zeerip earned one win apiece in their respective weight classes. After earning the narrow 6-4 decision in the fourth round of the consolation bracket Monday night, Abro picked up two-straight decisions on day two of the tournament before falling to Ruben Franklin of CSU Bakersfield in a 3-1 sudden victory to end his day in Evanston.
Davis started off the day strong for the Green and White, grabbing a 4-3 decision over Old Dominion's Austin Coburn but was unable to stay alive in his second bout of the day, falling to Frank Cousins of Wisconsince in a 6-3 decision at 174 lbs.
Zeerip also posted a victory in his first bout of the afternoon with a 15-5 major decision but was unable to take the tiebreaker over Rider's Chad Welch. Despite it being his second loss of the tournament, Zeerip had one more bout to wrestle for the seventh-place match at 157 lbs. The Fremont, Mich. native was unable to hold off Doug Welch of Purdue as Welch blanked Zeerip in a 7-0 decision to secure the seventh-place finish.
The Eagles will kick off the 2015 schedule with their first Mid-American Conference dual as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the University of Northern Iowa Sunday, Jan. 4. First bout is slated to start at 2 p.m.
