Eagles Complete Day One of the Midlands Championships

Eastern will send five grapplers into day two of the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed day one of the 52nd Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University Monday Dec. 29.
The Green and White sit in 19th out of 59 teams at the conclusion of day one as it sees five wrestlers advance to day two of the tournament. The Eagles earned 19.5 points on day one as Iowa leads the field with 110.5 points.
Redshirt-junior Michael Shaw and redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip each had successful days on the mat making their way into the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes. Shaw grabbed two-straight decisions at 141 lbs. before falling in an 11-3 major decision to Mitchell Port of Edinboro, while Zeerip notched a major decision and a decision before dropping a high-scoring 24-10 bout to Isaiah Martinez of Illinois in the quarterfinals at 157 lbs.
Sophomore Shayne Wireman worked his way through the consolation bracket after falling in his first bout of the afternoon. The 125 lb. grappler earned a 14-8 decision over Barlow McGhee of Missouri before going on to win a 14-5 major decision over Garrison White of Northwestern to secure his spot in Tuesday's matches.
In just his third appearance of the 2014-15 season, Jacob Davis opened the tournament with a 6-3 decision over Shane Hughes of Columbia but could not pull off a win over Purdue's Chad Welsh, sending him into the consolation bracket. The North Ridgeville, Ohio native posted an 8-6 decision in the consolation bracket to earn his spot on day two of the tournament.
In the 197 lb. weight class, redshirt-junior Anthony Abro saw a successful day taking two major decision victories before dropping into the consolation bracket. The Canton, Mich. native won his first bout in the consolation bracket over Rider's Donald McNeil, 9-2, and was able to pencil in his name for day two of the tournament after defeating Patrick Downey of Iowa Central, 5-3, in his last bout of the day.
The tournament will conclude Tuesday. Dec. 30 with the third session of action as well as the semifinals, consolation matches, and seventh-place matches all starting at noon.
