Eagle Grapplers Place Third at Keystone Classic

The Green and White had nine wrestlers place in the top-six en route to a third-place team finish

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team had nine grapplers place in the top-eight to secure a third-place team finish at the Keystone Classic Sunday, Nov. 23.
Northwestern took the overall title, scoring 98 points, while Rider place second oveall with 92.5 points. The Eagles rounded out the top-three with 89 overall points to finish just one point ahead of the Univeristy of Pittsburgh.
Sophomore Shayne Wireman represented the Eagles at 125 lbs., making his way into the finals and securing the fourth tournament placing of his young career. The Lansing, Mich. native won three-straight matches, including a 16-6 major decision over Elliot Zackoski of Bloomsburg in the opening round of competition, before falling to Dom Forys of Pitt in a 4-0 decision to take home a second-place finish.
Both Nicholas Barber and Brandon Zeerip earned fourth-place finishes in their respective weight classes as both fell into the consolation bracket early. Barber earned a 5-2 decision over Joe Velliquette in the 149 lb. weight class to move onto the quarterfinals where he met a familiar foe in No. 1 Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern. Tsirtsis got the best of Barber, earning a 4-0 decision before the Cleveland, Ohio native grabbed three-straight victories by decision to secure a spot in the third-place match. The sophomore grappler was unable to bring down Bryant Clagon of Rider as he fell in a 5-2 decision to finish fourth overall at 149 lbs.
Zeerip fell in a 6-4 decision in his first bout of the day to Maaziah Bethea of the University of Pennsylvania before winning four-straight matches in the consolation bracket, three of which were by decision. In the semifinal round of the consolation bracket, the Hesperia, Mich. native notched his first pin of the season in just 51 seconds to move on to the third-place bout. Much like Barber, Zeerip was unable to defeat his opponent from Rider, falling in a 4-3 decision, and taking home the fourth-place finish.
The Green and White also saw two EMU grapplers place fifth in their respective weight classes as Austin Geerlings and Mike Curby both had a successful day on the mat. After winning his opening bout by pinning his opponent, Geerlings fell in the quarterfinals to Taylor Walsh of Indiana but surged a comeback in the consolation bracket winning two-straight matches by decision. The sophomore was unable to come away with a win in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, but grabbed a 9-7 decision over teammate Devan Marry in the fifth-place match.
Curby found his rhythm at the Keystone Classic as he grabbed his first five wins of the season. The redshirt-senior notched three pins on the
afternoon, two of which were in 30 seconds or less, while earning one decision and one sudden victory en route to his fifth-place finish.
Finally, the Green and White had four grapplers place sixth at the Keystone Classic to wrap up a third-place team finish. After winning his first two bouts in the championship bracket at 133 lbs., Vincent Pizzuto dropped two-straight matches in the consolation bracket, sending him into the fifth/sixth place match. The redshirt-junior was unable to notch a win in the bout, falling for the second time this season to Northwestern's Dominic Malone in a 14-1 major decision.
In the 165 lb. weight class, Marry found four wins on the afternoon, three of which were extra-point victories. The redshirt-sophomore notched two pins and a major decision before falling in a narrow 9-7 decision to Geerling to take home the sixth-place finish. Redshirt-junior Anthony Abro placed sixth for the Green and White in the 197 lb. weight class, grabbing three-straight victories in the championship bracket before falling to familiar foe in No. 10 Alex Polizzi of Northwestern. Unable to find another win in the consolation bracket, Abro placed sixth overall in his 2014-15 tournament debut.
Redshirt-freshman Gage Hutchison was the final Eagle to stand on the podium at the Keystone Classic, winning three-straight bouts after dropping into the consolation bracket. The Buchanan, Mich. native grabbed two decisions and a major decision, while receiving two byes on the afternoon en route to a sixth-place finish for the Green and White.
The Eagles saw four final grapplers notch points toward the overall team score as Kayne MacCallum notched a major decision and a pin at 174 lbs, Derek Davison grabbed a major decision and a decision at 165 lbs., and both Cole Dillman and Michael Shaw picked up decisions in their respective weight classes.
Eastern Michigan will take a week off before traveling to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals Saturday, Dec. 6. The Green and White will have three duals, taking on teams from Cal Poly, Drexel, and Princeton.
