Eastern Michigan Falls to Kent State in First Round of MAC Tournament

The Eagles dropped a four set match at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- After qualifying as the No. 6 seed in the 2014 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament, Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team fell in the opening round to MAC East foe and No. 7-seeded Kent State University in four sets. EMU took the opening set, 25-23, before dropping three in a row, 22-25, 24-26, 22-25.
Stacey Perinar led the Eagles on offense with 17 kills, while Kelsey Jones and Katie Krasowski added 11 and 10, respectively. Jill Briner set the Eagles up, coming away with 43 assists, while she picked up 24 digs, defensively. In total, Eastern managed just a .080 attack percentage. On the other side of the net Corynne Smith picked up a season-best 31 digs, while Natalie Folk contributed a career-high 22 digs and a pair of service aces in her final match as an Eagle.
The Green and White hit just .079 in the opening frame but Jones and Krasowski powered EMU to a 1-0 lead as Eastern took the opening frame 25-23. Jones picked up a set-high six kills, while Krasowski notched four. Briner posted 12 of her assists and eight digs in the opening set, while Smith notched nine digs in the first frame. Despite being outhit by the Golden Flashes, Eastern used 14 kills in the first set to defeat KSU.
The Golden Flashes came out swinging strong is set two on their way to evening up the match at one-set apiece. Eastern was on the wrong end of a 22-25 decision in the second set as Kent outhit the Eagles .185 to .100. Folk recorded eight of her digs in the second set, but Eastern's offense could not match that of KSU in the frame.
The Eagles continued to struggle on the offensive end in set three. Despite leading late in the frame, Kent State made a push for a set win, moving on top of the Green and White, 2-1, after another EMU setback, 24-26.
The Golden Flashes closed the door on EMU in set four, 25-22, dashing Eastern's hope at a MAC Championship. Tinuke Aderemi-Ibitola posted five kills for KSU, while the Eagles were only able to hit at a .056 clip in the final set of the match. Smith was a bright spot in the set, recording 11 digs in the final frame of her junior season.
The Eagles completed the season with an 18-13 record, to go along with a 9-7 tally in MAC play.
