Eastern Closes 2014 Regular Season with 3-2 Win at NIU

The Eagles locked up the No. 6 seed for the MAC Tournament
DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team completed the regular season Saturday, Nov. 15, by defeating Northern Illinois University in five sets, 25-14, 25-16, 19-25, 18-25 and 15-11. The Eagles (18-12, 9-7 MAC) locked-in the No. 6 seed in the 2014 Mid-American Conference Tournament following their win over the Huskies (21-9, 14-2 MAC).
Kelsey Jones was the Green and White's catalyst on the offensive side of the net posting a career-best 12 kills, while hitting .345. Megan Crawshaw posted 10 kills, while Jill Briner added eight, Melva Smith and Katie Krasowski each notched seven. Briner posted a double-double by picking up 48 assists and 12 digs. Defensively, Corynne Smith led the way with 25 digs, while Krasowski notched a solo block and four assists and Crawshaw added four block assists of her own.
Eastern cruised in the first set, hitting .364 with 11 kills on 22 attempts, with just three errors. Devon Murray posted a team-best four kills, while Jones added three kills. As a team, the Eagles posted three blocks in the 25-14 set victory. EMU held Northern Illinois to a .000 attack percentage.
The Green and White took set two with ease, 25-16, as well. Eastern Michigan hit .244 and held NIU to a .022 attack percentage in the set. Corynne Smith notched 11 digs in the second set, while Jones led the offense hitting .556 with five kills in nine attempts and Briner posted 11 of her assists in the set.
Eastern saw struggles in the third set falling, 19-25. Melva Smith recorded a team-best five kills. Mackenzie Roddy posted nine kills in the set which helped Northern Illinois to a .357 attack percentage. Alexis Gonzalez notched 16 assists in the set on the way to a 2-1 score.
Crawshaw led the way offensively for the Eagles, posting four kills, while Stacey Perinar added three of her own. Although the Green and White had solid outputs from a pair its athletes, Eastern struggled as a squad, hitting .122. Roddy added six more kills on a .454 attack percentage while Gonzalez contributed 14 more assists. As a team, the Huskies hit .368 on the way to evening things up 2-2.
Finally, the Eagles were able to get on the right track, knocking off NIU, 15-11, in the fifth set. Krasowski notched four kill to lead EMU to a 3-2 victory in the final match of the 2014 campaign.
Eastern will square off with the No. 7-seeded Kent State University at 7:30 p.m. in Athens, Ohio for the first round of the 2014 MAC Tournament.
