The Eagles traveled to Miami to complete the fall portion of the schedule

MIAMI, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team began the 2014 Panther Invitational Friday, Oct. 31, hosted by Florida International. The Eagles saw action against four different Florida-based institutions.

EMU started in doubles play, with the duo of Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova competing in Flight A. In the first round, the duo dropped a contest to the Elizabeth and Sarah Means from Florida Gulf Coast, 8-4, before defeating Alexandra Johannson and Alex Kaeser from Nova Southeaster, 8-5, in the consolation round. In Flight B, Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero fell, 8-3, to Barry University's Kimmy Twelker and Anaeve Pain, 8-5, while Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna took down Francesca Sella and Carlee Rizzolo from Nova Southeastern, 8-6. In the semifinal of the Flight B, Friedrichs and Almoyna defeated Barry's Sonja Larsen and Karina Goia, 8-6, advancing to the finals of the doubles section.

During singles play, Supejova dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Larsen, while Gogvadze was on the wrong side of a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 decision at the hands of FIU's Carlotta Orlando. In addition, Friedrichs fell to Barry's Emma Onila, 6-2, 6-4. In Flight B of the singles portion, the Eagles were swept as Almoyna, Martinovska and Ribero each fell in straight sets.

"We didn't handle the heat and wind well today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "These conditions are something we are here to work on for April in our conference season when we will be outside again.  We had some challenging match ups today, especially more than once against Barry, Division II national champs.  We will look to compete better the next two days here"

The Eagles continue play Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Panther Invitational at 10 a.m.
