Eagles drop their first MAC game of the season, 2-1, to the Zips

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to end Friday night, Oct. 3, as the University of Akron claimed a 2-1 decision over the Eagles at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field. The setback was the first Mid-American Conference loss of the season for EMU (6-3-1, 2-1-0 MAC), and the Zips (5-5-1, 1-2-0) improved to .500 on the season.

On a night where rain poured down for the entire contest, the Eagles pressured the home team but had a hard time finding the goal. Akron scored once in each half, and Angela Vultaggio recorded EMU's lone goal in the 81st minute. In Eastern's first penalty kick of the season, the senior netted her team-leading sixth goal of 2014.The Green and White nearly doubled up Akron in shots, 23-12, blasting nine shots on goal. On the other side of the pitch, MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week Megan McCabe(6-2-1) made two brilliant saves.

Madison Kaser and Lani Smith each scored a goal for Akron. Kaser's mark in the 12th minute was the only goal in the first half, while Smith increased UA's lead with a goal in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Klaire Adee (4-3-1) was difficult to get the ball past, stopping eight shots throughout the night.

The Zips began the game on the offensive, and Akron struck first with the game's first goal in the 12th minute. Taking the ball into the box, Sivic sent a pass right in front of the net. As McCabe tried to sneak in for the stop, Kaser jumped right in front and stretched out her left foot to connect for the goal. With 33:44 remaining in the first half, the Green and White found themselves trailing early.

Nearly 10 minutes later, the Eagles saw their first quality scoring opportunity of the game and almost tied the game at one goal apiece. From 20 yards out, Vultaggio blasted a shot that was denied by the crossbar. Rossi got the rebound off the bar and tried a shot of her own; however, Adee made a diving stop to keep the game in favor of the Zips.

Neither team was able to score for the rest of the first half as the Eagles found themselves trailing at the half for just the second time this season. After 45 minutes, EMU out-shot Akron 9-4 with four shots landing on goal. Adee stopped all four attempts, while McCabe made one save of the Zips' two shots on target.

To begin the second half, Vultaggio fired a shot just wide of the net as Akron gave her a difficult angle to deal with and prevented EMU from tying the game. Minutes later, the Zips went on the attack in an attempt to double their lead, but McCabe made a great move by coming off her line to deflect the shot away.

In the 56th minute, Madison Hirsch led a counterattack that looked like Eastern would knot the contest. Vultaggio made a run, receiving the ball and going past the keeper. With two Akron defenders going back towards the goal, the senior just missed the opening in EMU's best scoring chance of the match.

The Zips added another goal at the 64-minute mark as Smith chipped the ball over a charging McCabe to give Akron a 2-0 advantage with 26:23 remaining in the game.

Despite falling behind by two goals, Eastern continued to fight, which finally paid off in the 81st minute. Pressuring the Akron defense, EMU forced a hand ball by the Zips in the box. Taking the penalty kick, Vultaggio picked the right spot to find the back of the net, cutting UA's lead in half, 2-1, with just 9:12 left. The Eagles tried to keep the momentum to tie the match, but it was to no avail as Akron held on for the one-goal victory.

The Eagles will look to back to their winning ways as they remain on the road to close out the weekend, continuing its travel east to New York for a Sunday afternoon matchup, Oct. 5. EMU will square off against the University at Buffalo Bulls from UB Stadium with contest set to begin at noon.
