Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova will compete in the doubles regional quarterfinals on Sunday
URBANA, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team had two of its members competing Saturday, Oct. 18, in the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships at the Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Illinois. Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova were the remaining Eagles competing as they teamed up in doubles, while Supejova hit the court for singles play for the first time in the regional.
The duo continued its strong play in the doubles main draw by defeating the No. 2-seeded and No. 44-nationally ranked team of Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu from DePaul, 8-4. The victory secured the EMU doubles squad a spot in the quarterfinal round Sunday, Oct. 19.
Supejova also began her play in the singles main draw on Saturday. The Prague, Czech Republic native defeating cross-county rival Mira Ruder-Hook from Michigan, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6, before falling to Illinois' Melissa Kopinski, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6, in the round of 32, ending her singles run.
"This was a good competition day for our program," said Head Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. "We defeated the No. 2 seed in the region and nationally ranked doubles team, and Klara defeated one of the top 15 recruits from the 2014 U.S. Class, and dropped a heartbreaker in the second round to a very accomplished player. Our doubles is on a roll, and it will be exciting action tomorrow."
Sunday, Martinovksa and Supejova will continue their quest to become the ITA Midwest Regional champions in doubles when they square off with Notre Dame's Allison Miller and Julie Vrabel in the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the semifinals to follow at the Atkins Tennis Center.
