EMU's top doubles team will play in the round of 16 on Saturday

URBANA, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's tennis team continued action at the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Midwest Regional Friday, Oct. 17. Friday's action included the third round of the qualifying singles draw along with the first two rounds of the doubles main draw.

Maria Paula Ribero and Ani Gogvadze were the two Eagles remaining in the singles draw. Ribero dropped her match, 6-0, 6-1 to DePaul's Rebeca Mitrea, while Gogvadze also suffered a setback. The Tbilisi, Georgia native matched up with Michigan State's Lexi Baylis and was on the wrong side of a 6-3, 6-0 decision.

In the consolation round of singles play, Daphne Friedrichs knocked off Kadi Ilves, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0, while Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna and Andrea Martinovska each fell. Chanel Scudiero from Illinois State defeated Almoyna, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0, while it was Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau who took down Martinovska, 6-3, 6-0.

Moving to the doubles main draw, Gogvadze and Ribero teamed up to knock off Illinois' Jade Hilton and Julia Jamieson, 8-5, while Friedrichs and Almoyna came up short against Marquette's Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner, 8-5. Martinovska and Klara Supejova squared off with cross-county rivals Kristen Dodge and Kara Hall of Michigan, coming away with the win, 8-5.

In the doubles round of 32, Martinovska and Supejova continued their journey through the doubles draw with an 8-7 victory over Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova from Youngstown State. Gogvadze and Ribero lost in the round as Lauren Chypyha and Maria Avgerinos from Wisconsin got the best of them, 8-7.

A pair of Eastern Illinois squads knocked off the EMU squad of Almoyna and Friedrichs in the consolation round. EIU's Ali Foster and Hannah Kimbrough defeated the team, 8-6, before Grace Summers and Sephora Boulbahaiem knocked off Almoyna and Friedrichs, 8-4.

"Our singles play was not our best to start the day, however we recovered with some very encouraging doubles play from our top two teams," remarked Head Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. "I like how aggressively we are playing now in doubles, something we've been working on all Fall."

The ITA Regionals will continue Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Atkins Tennis Center. In the doubles round of 16, Martinovska and Supejova will square off with DePaul's Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu, while Supejova will begin the singles main draw by hitting the court with Michigan's Mira Ruder-Hook.
