Tennis to Compete in ITA Midwest Regional

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team will head to Champaign, Ill. to compete in this year's ITA Midwest Regional this week, Oct. 16-21. The four-day event will be held at the Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of host school, the University of Illinois.
Last season at the ITA Midwest Regional, three Eagles made it to the round of 32 as Diana Davitaia, Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova each clinched spots. Each of the squad members did fall in the subsequent round to Big Ten competitors.
This year in the ITA Midwest Regional there will be 48 qualifying singles players, 48 main draw singles and 48 doubles teams. The Midwest Region is made up of teams from Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and the northern part of Illinois. The 48 qualifying singles players will need to win three rounds in order to advance to the main draw, which will take eight players from the qualifying rounds.
Daphne Fredrichs, Andrea Martinovska, Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero will represent the Green and White in the qualifying singles which starts Thursday, Oct. 16, while Supejova will be the only Eagle in the main draw singles which will kick off Saturday, Oct. 18.
The doubles teams of Supejova/Martinovska, Gogvadze/Ribero and Friedrich/Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna will begin competition Friday, Oct. 17, in the doubles main draw.
Competing teams in the competition include: Akron, Bradley, Butler, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, IPFW, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Milwaukee, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, Wisconsin and Youngstown State.
