Gogvadze and Ribero Each Still Alive in Singles Draw at ITA Regionals

The two Eagles will hit the court again on Friday
URBANA, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team began action at the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Atkins Tennis Center. Four Eagles competed in the Qualifying Singles Draw on Thursday.
Maria Paula Ribero led things off for EMU in the qualifying singles draw. The Bucaramanga, Colombia native dropped Butler's Kylie Haviland, 6-0, 6-4, to move on to the second round of the 2014 ITA Regionals. In addition, Ani Gogvadze knocked off Toledo's Lexy Pitt, 6-4, 7-6, earning a spot in the second round. Andrea Martinovska was the only Eagle competing in the qualifying round to come away without a win after falling in three sets to Sidney Huck from Toledo. Daphne Friedrichs received a bye in the opening round.
In round two, Friedrichs fell early to Ohio State's Grainne O'Neal, 6-4, 6-1, however, Ribero continued her winning ways, by defeating Alyssa Straub from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 6-4, 7-5, moving on into the third round of qualifying. Gogvadze also made her way into the third round with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Nino Sujasvili from Detroit.
Martinovska moved on to the consolation round where she defeated Cleveland State's Jana Schober, 6-2, 6-2, while Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna fell to Grace Tapak from Illinois, 7-6, 6-4.
Both Gogvadze and Ribero will continue the qualifying draw Friday, Oct. 17. Gogvadze will take on Michigan State's Lexi Baylis, while Riberos will square off with Rebeca Mitrea from DePaul in round three.
