YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After dropping the doubles point, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team took all but one singles match to top IPFW, 5-2, Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Chippewa Racquet Club. With the win, Eastern moves to 4-1 on the young season.

Eastern dropped two-of-three doubles matches as the duo of Zsofia Biro and Daphne Friedrichs came away with the lone victory, 6-4. Diana Davitaia and Nino Mebuke fell, 7-6, to Mayu Sato and Marcy Huck in the final doubles match and were unable to pick up the doubles point for EMU. At No. 2-doubles, Maria Paula Ribero and Mariya Toncheva dropped a score of 6-4 to Miloslava Shustova and Emily Richardson.

The Green and White dominated singles play, winning five-of-six matches. Davitaia was the only Eagle to come up on the losing side of the ledger, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Sato at No. 1-singles. Mebuke came away with an easy 6-1, 6-0 finish, giving EMU their first point of the day. Toncheva wasn't far behind, notching a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sofia Sorokina at No. 3-singles, putting EMU up 2-0. Davitaia's loss was the next decision, knotting things up at two points apiece.

Ribero came in to win 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets, putting Eastern back up, 3-2. Friedrichs sealed the match at No. 4-singles, topping Shustova, 6-3, 6-2. Biro then gave the Eagles an extra point by knocking off Carlota Trevino, 6-4, 6-4.

Eastern is back in action later this evening, Jan. 25, when it hosts in-state rival Oakland University at the Chippewa Club. First serve is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
