YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team wrapped up an evening tilt against Wayne State University, Jan. 24, with a 176-122 victory. The Eagles now boast a 7-2 (3-1 MAC) dual record, while the Warriors now sit at 5-2.
The Green and White won 8-of-16 events in Jones Natatorium, but its win was secured well before the closing of the meet. The squad put its 400 freestyle relay teams in as exhibition swims, but had the scores counted the team of Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central), Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon), Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte), and Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) would have claimed the winning time as they finished nearly four seconds ahead of WSU's A-team with a 3:31.99 finish.
Half of the team's victories came from freestyle events, as Van Allen claimed wins in both the 200 and 500. The freshman swam the 200 free in a time of 1:53.25, while Jackson followed up with the second-place finish. Van Allen then took the 500 free in 5:09.24 as teammates Allison Murslack (Gibsonia, Pa.-Pine-Richland) and Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) rounded out a 1-2-3 sweep in the event.
Detro set a team season-best in the 100 free, touching in at 51.70, while Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) was runner-up in the race. MacLean then led another group of top-three finishes in the 50 free. Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) and Garringer took the second and third spots, respectively.
The final two victories in the swimming events were awarded to Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine). The junior took both breaststroke events, winning the 200 breast by nearly five seconds. Freshman Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) trailed Dorszewski in both events to claim the runner-up time.
Though the Eagles did not have any other swimming victories, the strength of the team as a whole paved the way for the matchup's victory, as many races saw the swimmers finish in a 2-3-4 fashion. In the 200 fly, Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) led the convocation of Eagles as Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.) and Meghan Richardson (Midland, Mich.-Herbert Henry Dow) took third and fourth, respectively. Godlewski would go on to be the lead swimmer in the 200 back, as she raced to a team season-best time of 2:05.96.
In the diving events completed earlier in the afternoon, Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Central) won both the 1- and 3-meter springboard competitions. Hulvey scored over 300 points in each event, as she notched a 317.33 on the 3-meter board and a 349.13 on the 1-meter board. The Eagles enjoyed a 1-2-3 finish on the 3-meter springboard as Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) took second and Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) was the third-place diver.
The Eagles will not be out of competition for long, as they host No. 18 Ohio State University and Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University tomorrow, Jan. 25, in Jones Natatorium. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. and live results will be available through EMUEagles.com.
