YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team took down Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University, 185-112, Jan. 25 in Jones Natatorium. The Green and White had originally scheduled to dual against Ohio State University in Saturday's meet, but the competition had to be postponed on account of inclement weather.
The Eagles won 11-of-16 events in the afternoon's matchup, all of which came by way of individual victory. Leading the way for the squad was Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), who not only claimed two victories but also set career-best and team season-best times in both the 100 and 200 breast. The junior barely surpassed her previous personal record in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:03.90, which places her in the seventh spot on the EMU all-time top-10 performance list. She then swam a 2:18.46 in the 200 breast, good for the eighth spot in the top-10 for the event.
Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) stayed consistently strong in the backstroke events, as the freshman finished the 100 back in 58.63 and the 200 back with a time of 2:07.72. Mitcheltree was trailed by fellow freshman Haley Shaw (Fenton, Mich.-Fenton), who was runner-up in both races.
The Green and White also saw success in the freestyle events, placing a swimmer in first and second in three events. The rookie duo of Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) and Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) went 1-2 in the 500 free, while the distance pair of Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) and Allison Murslack (Gibsonia, Pa.-Pine-Richland) rolled through the competition in the 1000 free, finishing at least nine seconds ahead of Ball State's swimmers. Sophomore Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) paced Van Allen in the 200 free, as the two finished less than a second apart.
Two more victories came to the Eagles, as Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) led Jackie Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) and Jackson to a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 fly, and Swartz went on to win the 200 IM with a 2:10.54 mark.
The Eagles boasted the only two divers to score above 300 points in both events. Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Central) notched a 322.05 on the 1-meter springboard and a 342.70 on the 3-meter springboard, while Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) compiled a score of 310.95 and Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.H.-Nashua) scored 309.15 points in the 3-meter dive.
Since the Eagles had amassed enough points to clinch the win over the Cardinals, they swam their final event, the 400 freestyle relay, as an exhibition. Had the score been counted in competition, the team of Detro, Van Allen, Godlewski, and Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) would have claimed a final victory for the Green and White. Their time of 3:32.25 was just a hair faster than BSU's A-Team's 3:32.68 finish.
The team has completed its home schedule for the 2013-14 season, but it has not finished dual meet competition. The Eagles will travel to Oxford, Ohio next week to take on Miami University, Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. The meet will be the final MAC dual meet of the current campaign, and the team looks to build to a three-MAC win streak before the season comes to a close.
