OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)-- The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team dropped a 126-174 decision to the Miami University RedHawks, Feb. 1. With the setback, the team drops to 8-4 (4-2 MAC), while Miami improves to an 8-1 (5-0 MAC) record and remains the only unbeaten team in conference duals.
The Eagles won 6-of-16 events in the afternoon's matchup, but had numerous second-place finishes in which they were barely out-touched by the RedHawks. One of the more considerable setbacks to the team was Miami's 1-2-3 sweep of the distance events, as the 500 and 1000 free proved to be its primary strength.
A handful of close races did go in favor of the Green and White, such as Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine)'s quarter-second win over Stephanie Lemire in the 100 breast. Lemire and Dorszewski went head-to-head in the 200 breast, but the RedHawk got the upper hand in the event as she finished .3 seconds ahead of the junior.
The duo of Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) and Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) claimed the top two spots in the 200 free, as Van Allen barely squeaked by her sophomore teammate, finishing .02 seconds ahead of Detro with a 1:52.75 mark. The Green and White had another string of consecutive finishers in the 200 fly, which was captured by Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) and followed up by Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) and Jackie Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville). Swartz went on to win the 100 fly in 56.95.
Rounding out the winners for the Green and White was Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Pickerington), who remained the top contender in the diving events. Hulvey scored a total of 326.10 on the 3-meter springboard and came up with a mark of 309.83 in the 1-meter dive. The senior was one-of-two competitors to score above 300 points in both events, as Miami's Nikki Craft was the runner-up in each dive.
The meet ended with another nail biter, as the 400 free relay team of Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville), Godlewski, Detro, and Van Allen came up just shy of a victory. Their mark of 3:29.62 trailed Miami's team by just .1 second.
The women's team will take on one more meet before facing the conference in its entirety at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 27-Mar. 1. In preparation for the league meet, the Eagles will head to Columbus, Ohio, where the No. 19 Buckeyes will host the Ohio State Invitational, Feb. 8-9.
