EMU earns victories over Buffalo and Michigan State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team wrapped up a successful Saturday afternoon with wins over Mid-American Conference foe the University at Buffalo and Big Ten member Michigan State University. The Eagles took down the Bulls by a tight 152-148 margin and topped the Spartans 193-106. With the pair of wins, the Green and White improves to 6-3 (3-1 MAC), while Buffalo falls to 2-3 (0-3 MAC) and MSU drops to 2-2 (0-1 B1G).
The Eagles won 6-of-16 events against the Bulls and 12-of-16 against Michigan State in their pair of victories. To start off the meet, the 200 medley relay team of Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet), and Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) set a team season-high by combining for a time of 1:46.02. The finish was good for second to both the Bulls and the Spartans.
Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) controlled both breaststroke events, claiming overall first-place in the 100 and 200. Additionally, in the 100 breast, the junior tied her season-best time of 1:03.91. Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) was also the victor over both visiting squads in the 200 fly, which she completed in 2:03.59. She also competed in the 200 back, finishing just behind teammate Mitcheltree to claim a 1-2 finish over MSU in the event.
Two Eagles claimed the season-best time for the team, as Mitcheltree swam a career-best 58.07 in the 100 back, finishing runner-up against Buffalo and winning the race against MSU. Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) also chipped in a personal-best, swimming the 200 free in 1:52.13 to claim victory over the Spartan swimmers.
The squad ended the meet with a victory over both visiting teams, as the 400 free relay team of Godlewski, Van Allen, Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) clocked in at 3:28.22 to end the meet on a high note.
The squad came away with decisive success on the springboards, as Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Central) led the way in the 1-meter dive and Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) took the 3-meter dive.
The Eagles will remain at home for the next two meets, as they will host Wayne State University Friday, Jan. 24 and will then turn around to host Ohio State and MAC opponent Ball State University Saturday, Jan. 25. Both meets will begin at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
