Northern Illinois / Ohio Dual Notes

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team returns to Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on Northern Illinois in its second Mid-American Conference dual of the 2013-14 season. The Eagles will square off against the Huskies at 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. Eastern then heads to Athen, Ohio, Sunday, Jan. 19 to take on the Bobcats of Ohio. The dual is slated for 2 p.m.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Northern Illinois currently holds a 4-6 overall record and has been unable to secure a conference win as it fell to 0-3 on the season after dropping its most recent dual to Ohio. Andrew Morse leads the NIU squad as he has posted 17 wins at 157 lbs., while Shawn Scott (197 lbs.) has grabbed 14 wins and Jared Torrence (HWT) has secured 12 victories. Morse has been a hard competitor for the Huskies as he has recorded four pins on the season, while Scott has a team-high seven dual wins this year. Scott has led the team in accumulating 27 dual points for the Cardinal and Black, while Morse has garnered 21 points.
Caleb Busson (184 lbs.) and Scott clinched Northern Illinois' only bout wins against the Bobcats as Busson pinned Ryan Garringer and Scott earned the 6-4 decision. NIU also has two senior grapplers who are nearing 50 wins as both Matt Mougin (174 lbs.) and Torrence are just two wins away from the mark.

SERIES HISTORY VS. NIU: Nothern Illinois holds a commanding 25-4-1 record over Eastern in the all-time history between the two squads. However, the Eagles have won each of the last two meetings as they took down the Huskies, 22-17, last year on the road, Jan. 26, 2013.
The win marked the first Mid-American Conference victory for the Green and White in the 2012-13 season, improving its MAC record to 1-2 while also keeping NIU winless in conference bouts.
Eastern used pins from both Nick Whitenburg and then-senior Aaron Sulzer, while Jacob Davis grabbed a major decision en route to the EMU victory. The Huskies return six starters from last year's lineup, while Eastern returns four of its 10 starters from the dual a season ago.

SCOUTING No. 25 OHIO: The Bobcats are 5-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in MAC duals as they have only fallen to the 2013 MAC Tournament Champions, Missouri. Ohio's conference win came Jan. 10 as the Bobcats defeated Northern Illinois in decisive fashion with a 33-7 victory. Recently, the Bobcats moved into the USA Today/NWCA Division I rankings as they now rank in the top-25 of all Division I programs, making them the third ranked team in the MAC.
No. 11 Jeremy Johnson (HWT) paces the Ohio squad as he has tallied 22 wins on the season and has only suffered three losses, while Harrison Hightower posts 21 wins at 165 lbs as he pinned NIU's Shaun'Que McMurty in 2:29  in his latest outing. Hightower's nine pins on the season ranks him third in the nation in falls , trailing national leader Taylor Walsh of Indiana by 10 pins.

SERIES HISTORY VS. OHIO: The Bobcats hold a 6-2 record over the Eagles in the past eight seasons as the Green and White struggle when facing the MAC opponent.
EMU fell in tough fashion just a season ago in Athens as the Eagles held a narrow two-point lead heading into the final bout of the dual. The Bobcats were able to find the win they needed in Phil Wellington as he came up with a 4-2 decision at 197 lbs.
The Green and White last defeated Ohio, Dec. 4, 2011, when the Eagles took a 22-14 victory at Bowen Field House. Nick Whitenburg and Jared Germaine each earned wins for EMU as Whitenburg grabbed a major decision at 197 lbs. and Germaine clinched a decision at 125 lbs.
Ohio returns its entire starting 10 from just a season ago, while the Eagles return five-of-six starters from last year's dual.

WIN / AWN RANKINGS: Redshirt-senior Jared Geramaine received rankings at 125 lbs. for the Jan. 13 AWN Rankings.  Germaine is ranked No. 18 at 125 lbs. as he is 9-0 on the season after picking up three victories at the Pitt Duals. The Saginaw, Mich. native clinched a pin over Duke before earning two decisions in his final dual bouts against UNC and N.C. State.

DELPORTO TIES ALL-TIME EMU COACHING RECORD: Head Coach Derek DelPorto currently holds a 80-71-2 record at EMU, which is one win shy of breaking former head coach John Eisley's EMU coaching record. While at Eastern, Eisley posted an 80-74-4 record in his 12-year tenure. If DelPorto picks up just one more wins this season, he will take the all-time wins record in just eight seasons at the helm.
DelPorto clinched the tying win at the Pitt Duals, Jan. 12, when the team defeated Duke, 26-10, in its first-of-three duals on the afternoon.

EAGLES PICK UP ONE AT PITT: Head Coach Derek DelPorto tied the all-time career coaching wins record, Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Pitt Duals as the Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad went 1-2 on the afternoon.
The Eagles defeated Duke 26-10 in its first dual of the day before dropping two-straight. The Green and White was unable to hold off its second ACC opponent of the afternoon as North Carolina took the narrow 18-16 victory and N.C. State clinched a 32-11 win over EMU.
Redshirt-senior Jared Germaine continued to be perfect in his final season for Eastern as he went 3-0 on the day with one pin and two decisions, including a win over No. 10 Nathan Kraisser of UNC. With the wins, Germaine improves to 9-0 overall on the season. Redshirt-seniors Phillip Joseph and Brandon Zeerip each clinched two wins for Eastern as Joseph went 2-1 and Zeerip went 2-0, while Anthony Abro and Nicholas Barber each secured two wins in their respective weight classes.
After defeating Duke in decisive fashion, the Eagles were unable to hold off UNC as it took the close 18-16 victory. The match would come down to the final bout, which is a position the Eagles have been successful twice this season, but Khodor Hoballah was unable to pin Bob Coe to allow Eastern to take home the victory.
Eastern did not let the setback against UNC slow its efforts as the Eagles came out strong, taking the first three bouts from N.C. State, but were unable to hold them off as the Wolfpack closed out the match with seven-straight victories.

THREE EAGLES REMAIN RANKED IN MAC JANUARY POLLS: Three EMU redshirt-seniors are currently ranked in the Mid-American Conference January Polls as Jared Germaine is ranked second behind freshman Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa at 125 lbs.  Nick Whitenburg ranks third at 197 lbs., while Phillip Joseph is fourth at 184 lbs.
Germaine boasts a perfect 9-0 record for the Eagles at the 125 lb. weight class and has yet to be beaten in his final season, while Whitenburg holds a 5-2 record, falling only to Drexel's Brandon Palik and Michigan State's Nick McDiarmid.
Joseph has proven to be a steady competitor after moving up to 184 lbs. in his senior season as he holds a 13-5 overall record and a 8-2 dual record. The Lapeer, Mich. native clinched the deciding pin over Stanford to allow the Eagles to beat the then-No. 23 Cardinal 18-16 at the Convocation Center, Nov. 24.

OUTSCORING THE OPPOSITION: The Eagles are currently outscoring their opponents 231-156 on the season as they have only allowed seven teams to score in the double-digits through their first eleven duals. The Green and White's 231 team points are two points ahead of the Eagles point total through 11 duals last year as the 2012-13 squad had two big victories over non-division I programs.
EMU dominated its first four opponents at the EMU Duals as it dropped only seven of its 40 bouts on the day, while averaging two pins per dual with eight total, including five in its first dual against Tiffin. The Green and White suffered its first loss of the season at Michigan State, but kept the Spartans to only one pin and six decisions, keeping the score under 30.
The Eagles came up with close wins over Stanford and Old Dominion, using a Phillip Joseph pin against the Cardinal and a Khodor Hoballah decision against the Monarchs. Eastern continued its dominating ways over Olivet as it defeated the Comets 23-9, which allowed EMU to keep its opponent point total under 100.
The Green and White continued to have its most successful season when they secured a win over Duke at the Pitt Duals, but were unable to close out the day undefeated as it suffered losses to both UNC and N.C. State, sending the opposition's point total over 100.

GERMAINE REMAINS PERFECT: Redshirt-senior Jared Germaine has come out strong in his final season as an Eagle. The Saginaw, Mich. native boasts a perfect 9-0 overall and dual record on the season as he has notched big wins in each of his bouts.
Germaine posted two decisions and a major decision at the EMU Duals before taking a 13-7 decision over Michigan State's Hermilo Esquivel and a 9-3 decision over Stanford's Tommy Pawelski.
Germaine's sixth win of the season got the Green and White off to a quick 3-0 lead over Old Dominion as he captured a 4-2 decision over Jerome Robinson in the opening bout. Robinson took an early 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first period before Germaine grabbed an escape to come within one.  Germaine grabbed his first takedown in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Neither wrestler was able to score in the final period as Germaine remained undefeated and improved to 6-0 on the season.
The redshirt-senior had yet another perfect day when they team headed to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Pitt Duals. Germaine went 3-0 on the afternoon for the Green and White as he secured one pin and two decisions, including a 9-3 decision over No. 10 Nathan Kraisser of UNC.
