PITTSBURGH, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – Head Coach Derek DelPorto tied the all-time career coaching wins record, Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Pitt Duals as the Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad went 1-2 on the afternoon.
The Eagles defeated Duke 26-10 in its first dual of the day before dropping two-straight. The Green and White was unable to hold off its second ACC opponent of the afternoon as North Carolina took the narrow 18-16 victory and N.C. State clinched a 32-11 win over EMU.
DelPorto now holds a 80-71-2 record at EMU, which ties former EMU Head Coach John Eisley. While at Eastern, Eisley posted an 80-74-4 record in his 12-year tenure.
"Our effort today in 25-of-30 matches was satisfactory, but the other matches cost us." said DelPorto. "Even in some of the matches we lost, we fought really hard and came up short. I'm okay with a very high effort loss.
Redshirt-senior Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) continued to be perfect in his final season for Eastern as he went 3-0 on the day with one pin and two decisions, including a win over No. 10 Nathan Kraisser of UNC. With the wins, Germaine improves to 9-0 overall on the season. "Jared was awesome today," said DelPorto "The little changes he needed to make from last year to this year are really paying off."
Redshirt-seniors Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) and Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) each clinched two wins for Eastern as Joseph went 2-1 and Zeerip went 2-0, while Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) each secured two wins in their respective weight classes.
"Brandon had a good day," said DelPorto "I pulled him in the third match because I thought we matched up styles better with Jimmy against N.C. State."
After defeating Duke in decisive fashion the Eagles were unable to hold of UNC as it took the close 18-16 victory. The match would come down to the final bout, which is a position the Eagles have been successful in two times this season, but Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) was unable to pin Bob Coe to allow Eastern to take home the victory.
"We split five matches a piece with UNC but ended up losing the dual on bonus points." said DelPorto. "Khodor had to pin in order for us to win and he did all he could to try and make it happen. It is tough to pin someone when his only job is to not get pinned. I'm certainly happy with his effort."
Eastern did not let the defeat against UNC slow its efforts as the Eagles came out strong taking the first three bouts from N.C. State, but were unable to hold them off as the Wolfpack closed out the match with seven-straight victories.
"N.C. State started off awesome.," stated DelPorto " We won the first three matches and two of them were bonus point wins over pretty good guys, unfortunately things went south fast and nothing went right."
The Eagles will be back in action Friday, Jan. 17, when they take on Mid-American Conference opponent, Northern Illinois. The dual is slated to start at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
