COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- After firing the fifth-lowest team score in the field in Sunday's second round with a 14-over par 298, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team wrapped up the first day of competition of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at the OSU Scarlet Course in 11th place with a 36-hole score of 605 (307-298).
The Eagles cut nine strokes off their opening-round score of 307 with a 298 in the afternoon to finish Sunday's action 44 shots out of the lead held by the top ranked team in the country, the California Golden Bears.
Cal recorded rounds of 281 and 280 take a 12-stroke lead over No. 27 Oklahoma with a 36-hole score of 561. No. 16 Oklahoma State follows in third place with a score of 577 in two rounds, while Purdue is in fourth place at 586.
Senior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario-Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) is tied for 26th in the star-studded field with a 149 (79-70). Sophomore Stuart Grehan (Tullamore, Ireland-Colaiste Choilm) and junior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Ancaster Secondary-Pfeiffer) are tied for 36th with a 152. Freshmen Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and Joseph Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) rounded out the lineup with 155 (76-79) and a 157 (81-76), respectively.
The Eagles are paired with Long Beach State and North Carolina in Monday's final round as they will tee off from the back nine beginning at 8:15 a.m. Golfstat will provide live scoring during the third and final round of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, which can be found online at www.golfstat.com.
