Baseball Comes Up Short at Michigan State, 6-3

Eagles remain on the road, traveling to Northern Illinois this weekend, May 10-12

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After defeating a Big Ten Conference foe one night ago, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not replicate the same offensive firepower Wednesday, May 8, on the road at McLane Baseball Stadium. The Eagles managed just seven hits as they fell to Michigan State University, 6-3, in the non-conference affair. With the loss, EMU drops to 22-25 on the season while the Spartans improve to 28-14, including 11-4 at home.

MSU starting pitcher Chase Rihtarchik (5-1) pitched five innings of two-run, six-hit baseball while striking out a pair of Eagles. The middle part of the Spartans' lineup did most of the damage as the three- and four-hole hitters, Jimmy Pickens and BlaiseSalter, went a combined 4-for-7 at the dish with three RBI and two runs scored.

Austin Wilson continued his torrid pace at the plate, going 3-for-4 for his third career three-hit game and extended his on-base streak to 10 in-a-row. Meanwhile for the Eagles, Jon Rubino saw his 13-game on-base streak snapped, with a 0-for-5 performance.

Senior Brian Valente (0-3) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out two in 4.2 innings of work.

The Eagles started the scoring with one run in the top of the second. Adam Sonabend was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Wilson followed with a single. Mitchell McGeein laid down a bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Two batter later, Marquise Gill found a hole in the right side of the MSU infield, allowing Sonabend to score, making it 1-0 in favor of EMU.

In the bottom half of the third inning, Michigan State took its first lead of the game. EMU starter Brian Valente quickly retired the first two batters before the Spartans made their two-out rally. After a single by shortstop Ryan Richardson, MSU right fielder Pickens sent a deep fly ball over the right field fence, giving the home team a 2-1 lead.

MSU tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, again with two outs. Valente's day ended after sending down two Spartans to begin the inning. Dartnell came on in relief, walking the first batter he faced, Pickens. Pickens continued to be a thron in Eastern's side, stealing second base before coming around to score on a double by the designated hitter Salter.

Eastern responded in its next opportunity at the plate, cutting the deficit back to one, 3-2, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Nick Rotola. However, Michigan State answered with three runs of its own, leaving the Eagles in a 6-2 hole.

Sam Ott showed why he's still the top hitter for the Eagles with an infield single in the ninth that Gill came around to score on via a throwing error, trimming the margin to three. However, it was not enough as the Spartans claimed the 6-3 victory.

EMU will head to DeKalb, Ill. for a three-game set against Mid-American Conference West Division leader Northern Illinois University, May 10-12.
