ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In a game that started on Tuesday, April 17, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team finally overcame a 20-day weather delay to secure a 13-4 victory win over the University of Michigan Tuesday, May 7, at the Wilpon Complex. The win marked the sixth consecutive time in the series the Eagles (22-24) had knocked off the Wolverines (24-22) dating back to the 2011 campaign.

The Eagles took advantage of the Wolverines inability to throw strikes, as the Michigan pitching staff walked eight and hit four more batters during the contest. Eastern Michigan responded with the gift runners to blow the contest wide open by exploding in the fifth inning for seven runs on just three hits. For the game, EMU finished with eight two-out RBI in the non- conference affair.

Michael Marsinek (Streetboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) notched a solid relief appearance of 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs on two hits as he picked up his first career victory. Alex Daar (0-1) was saddled with the loss, giving up three runs without retiring a batter.

Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) and Adam Sonabend (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Desert Mountain) each drove in three runs in the contest with Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem) and Nick Rotola (Wichita, Kan.-Word of Life Traditional School) each adding a pair of RBI as well.

The original contest was halted following a pair of weather delays with EMU leading 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning. The game was moved up from its original start time in hopes of getting the game in with inclement weather expected to enter the area. After Michigan retired the first two EMU batters, the storm arrived, causing a nearly two-hour postponement (1 hour, 47 minutes). On the first pitch of following the rain delay, Ott grounded out to second base as the Eagles were sent down in order.

Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) got the start for the Green and White. After striking out the U-M leadoff batter, the EMU starter gave up a double to Travis Maezes. Batistelli got Michigan right fielder Michael O'Neill to fly out to left, but threw a wild pitch on the next at bat to allow Maezes to advance to third. Four pitches later, he came around to score on a passed ball, giving the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead.

The Eagles answered right back in the top of the second as Sonabend doubled down the right field line. The junior first baseman came around to score due to heads up base running after Jamie Simpson (Dowagiac, Mich.-Dowagiac-Western Michigan) reached first on a throwing error by Maezes, the Michigan shortstop.

Eastern went on to take the lead in the top of the third as Michigan pitching struggled mightily on the mound. Three batters walked before Ott was hit by a pitch to bring in Rotola from third, making it 2-1 and leaving the bases loaded with nobody out. After Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) went down on strikes, Sonabend got hit second hit in as many plate appearances, sending a base-knock through the right side and bringing in two Eagles to increase the lead to three, 4-1.

However, after 62 minutes of action, lightning once again struck the area, causing the game to be halted.

After the extended delay, Michigan's O'Neil led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and came around to third on a throwing error. After back-to-back walks by Marsinek, Jack Sexton rolled a grounder to second to score the run and cut the deficit to a pair a 4-2. The lefty would induce another ground out to escape the jam with just one run across.

Eastern Michigan responded in the top of the fifth with some timely two-out offense to blow the contest wide open. Two hit-batters and a walk loaded the bases for the Eagles for Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.), who promptly singled back up the middle to plate a pair for EMU. The luck of Michigan would not change after a pitching change, as Chad Jasman was unable to record the final out for the Wolverines.

Jasman plunked another EMU batter to load the bases again and followed it up by walking in a run. With the sacks still juiced, Russell lined his 17th career triple over the centerfielder's head to clear the bases.  John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) plated Russel on the very next offering with a triple of his own for the Eagles' seventh run of the stanza to make it 11-2.

Sonabend tacked on his third hit of the contest in the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field. The blast was the Scottsdale, Ariz. native's second of the year.

Michigan would score one more run in the seven inning and another in the ninth, as the Eagles cruised to the nine-run decision.

EMU returns to the diamond Tuesday, May 8, for a contest at  Michigan State University before the Eagles head to DeKalb, Ill. for a three-game set against Mid-American Conference West Division leader Northern Illinois University, May 10-12.
