YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the series finale, 4-1, to Ball State University Sunday, May 5, in a Mid-American Conference West Division match-up at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles' offense was limited to just five hits on the day, as Cardinal pitching did not allow an extra base hit all afternoon long.

EMU drops to 21-24 (9-12 MAC) with the loss, while BSU improves to 22-20 (11-10 MAC) with the win. The series sweep marked the first time since the 2010 campaign that the Eagles had been swept at home, the last team to come into Ypsilanti and win three-straight was the University of Toledo,  May 14-16.

Sophomore John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) led the way offensively for the Eagles, as he finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with one run scored.  Offensively, the Eagles stranded nine runners on base and 36 during the weekend.

Ball State opened the scoring in the top of the second with a pair of doubles up the gap in left-center. Cody Campbell's two-bagger led off the frame and Billy Wellman's RBI double drove Campbell in to score. Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) limited the damage to just one run by stranding Wellman in scoring position.

A throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt by Battistelli allowed Elbert DeVarie to move up to second base with two out in the third. That miscue would result in an unearned Ball State tally as Sean Godfrey's hit through the left side plated DeVarie to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Nick Rotola (Wichita, Kan.-Word of Life Traditional School) came up with the Eagles' first hit of the game on a bouncing ball up the middle. EMU failed to get on the scoreboard as the Cardinals maintained their two-run spread a third of the way through the contest.

The hits kept coming for Ball State in the fourth. Cardinals batters recorded four hits in the inning off of Battistelli and added another run for a 3-0 edge. Battistelli departed with two gone in the frame and gave way to Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg), who converted the final out and stranded runners at second and third.

Blake Beemer smoked a two-out single off the glove of Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) at first base and in to right field to put runners at the corners. Dimmerling struck out Wellman with a curveball on a full count to keep it a three-run game.

EMU put two on with two outs in the fifth thanks to a pair of infield singles from Rubino and Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.). Jon Cisna pitched around Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem) and walked him on four straight pitches to load the bases. That spelled the end of the day for Cisna and left it up to Tyler Jordan. Jordan got the ground ball he needed, but the second baseman Ryan Spaulding dropped the baseball while trying to get the force out. With that, Rubino came home and got the Eagles on the board, 3-1. The Green and White was unable to scratch across any more runs as Weir struck out Jamie Simpson (Dowagiac, Mich.-Dowagiac-Western Michigan) to end the inning.

Ball State got the run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Campbell. The Cardinals did not record a hit in the inning as James was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on the sacrifice fly.

The Eagles' bats remained quiet through the eighth inning as Weir recorded the final two outs of that frame via the called third strike. In the ninth, Adam Sonabend (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Desert Mountain) tried to get the rally started with a lead-off single to right, but the Eagles went down in order after that as the Cardinals completed the series sweep.

EMU will travel to Michigan, May 7, and Michigan State, May 8, before playing its final road MAC series of the season when they head to DeKalb, Ill., May 10-12, for a three-game set versus West Division leader Northern Illinois University.
