Men's Golf Remains in Fifth Place at MAC Championships

NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will need to rally in a big way Sunday in order to recapture the Mid-American Conference title at the par 72, 7,243 yard Longaberger Golf Club. Kent State University owns a 18-stroke lead over the field after Saturday's third round of the 2013 MAC Championship.
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's squad entered the day in a tie with Bowling Green for fifth place, and left the course following Saturday's round in that same position. The Eagles carded a third round 310 for a two-day cumulative score of 919 (303-306-310). Tournament leader Kent State continued its scorching play with a one-under 287 for an 878 (291-300-287) and the 18-stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
Kent State will be joined by the University of Toledo (296-305-295=869) and Ball State University (296-305-298=899) in the final five threesomes of Sunday's round. Rounding out the field in order are Akron (307-300-295=902) in fourth, EMU and BGSU (310-299-310=919) in fifth, Miami (311-305-307=923) in seventh, Ohio in eighth (321-305-315=941) and Northern Illinois (321-314-307=942) ninth.
Individually, KSU's Taylor Pendrith still holds the lead with an eight-under 208 (70-68-70) followed by Akron's Charlie Bull in second place at 216 (76-72-68).
Four Eagles are ranked in the top 27, including senior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) who is tied for 15th place at 227 (78-75-74). Freshman Brett White (Kentwood, Mich.-East Kentwood) is tied for 21st place with a 231 (73-76-82). Freshman Stuart Grehan (Tullamore, Ireland-Colaiste Choilm) and senior Spencer Slade (Saline, Mich.-Saline-Savannah State) are tied for 27th with a 234. Rounding out the EMU lineup, junior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) fired a round of 78 for a 235 (77-80-78) in a 31st place tie.
The fourth and final round of the 2013 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday, May 5, at 8 a.m. Following competition, MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportsmen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
