Longo picks up first team accolades while Sonabend earns second team honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Two members of the Eastern Michigan University baseball team were named to the All Mid-American Conference teams, the conference announced Tuesday, May 21. EMU designated hitter Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) picked up First Team All-MAC honors while catcher Adam Sonabend (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Desert Mountain) earned Second Team All-MAC accolades. The teams were voted on by coaches at the 12 MAC member institutions.
Longo started every game for EMU as the designated hitter, batting in the cleanup spot. He led the team in home runs with seven on the year, including a three-run blast on a 2-for-5, four RBI day against Notre Dame, May 1. The junior tied for the team lead with 44 runs batted in, good enough for third in the league. Against Toledo, May 17, Longo tallied four RBI and two runs scored as part of a 3-for-5 performance. Nationally, Longo's home run total ranked 145th while his 44 RBI stood as the 142nd-best in the country.
Sonabend, a transfer from Mesa Community College, caught 14 opponents attempting to steal this season. The junior was named MAC Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19, when he went 5-for-7 with four RBI. He was EMU's third best hitter, notching a .325 batting average with 65 hits and 38 RBI. Sonabend ranked fourth in the MAC in on-base percentage, reaching base safely at a .419 clip, which was the best on the Eagles squad.
Both Eagles make the All-MAC list for the first time in their careers.
EMU finished the 2013 campaign with a record of 26-28, including 12-15 in MAC play.
