Eagles finish with a winning record against the Big Ten for the fourth time in last five years

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Head Baseball Coach Jay Alexander earned his 300th career win Tuesday, May 14, as the Eagles posted a 20-2 victory against Purdue University in the team's final regular season road test of the year at Alexander Field. Alexander, whom is in his fifth season coaching the Eagles, has guided the Green and White to 139 wins, while he notched 161 victories in six seasons at Wayne State University.

The white-hot EMU (25-26) offense struck for eight runs in the first inning and built the margin to 15 in the fourth. The defending Big Ten Conference Champion Boilermakers (17-31) finally collected their first base runner in the third stanza, but by then the final outcome had long been decided.  In total, Eastern scored runs in seven of the nine innings.

Eastern's 20 runs and 24 hits were each season highs for the Eagles.  The last time EMU scored at least 20-or-more runs in a contest was March 20, 2010, when the Green and White drove in 23 during a victory over West Virginia University. Meanwhile, the 24 base hits are the most since EMU pounded out 27 hits in a 27-7 victory over Bowling Green State University, April 8, 2009.

Eleven different offensive players in the EMU lineup had at least one hit on the evening. John Rubino, who led the way with a 4-for-4, three-RBI effort while Adam Sonabend was 4-for-5 with three runs score and 4 RBI. Nick Rotola continued his hot-streak with another three hit, three RBI day. The Wichita, Kan. native has 14 hits in his last 22 at bats for a .636 batting average with nine RBI and 10 runs scored since May 7.

Austin Wilson, Austin Williams, Daniel Russell and Jamie Simpson each had at least two hits and a pair of RBI.

Over its last six contests, Eastern Michigan is averaging more than 11 runs and 13 hits per game with a .343 batting average. (79-for-230).

Michael Marsinek (2-1) started with five solid innings, giving up just one run  and striking out three. Ryan Lavoie and Devon Bronson, Zane Birchler and Kristian Calibuso also pitched effectively for the Green and White in the victory.

Nine different Boilermakers toed the rubber in the game with Gavin Downs (1-1) taking the loss after lasting just the contest's first six batters. Down's was on the hook for five of the Eagles' eight first inning runs.

Also with the win, the Eagles finished 3-2 this season against teams that hail from the Big Ten Conference. Since Alexander took over head coaching duties in 2009, EMU has posted a winning record against the B1G in four out of five seasons by compiling a 15-14 record.

The contest featured two squads meeting on the diamond for the first time in 27 years, as EMU-PU last played May 11, 1986, when the Boilermakers took a doubleheader, 4-0 and 8-7, from the then-Hurons in West Lafayette, Ind. Despite EMU's victory, Purdue still holds an 8-3 edge in the all-time series.

EMU returns home to face off against the University of Toledo, May 16-18. The three-game Mid-American Conference set versus the Rockets will feature Thursday and Friday starts at 6 p.m. with Saturday's contest projected to start at 3 p.m. During the final homestand, Eastern Michigan will honor seniors Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park),  Neil Butara (Euclid, Ohio-St. Ignatius), Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg), Brian Hill (Flagstaff, Ariz.-Sinagua-Phoenix College),  Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville), Jamie Simpson (Dowagiac, Mich.-Dowagiac-Western Michigan), Brian Valente (Macomb, Mich.-Eisenhower-Saginaw Valley State) and Austin Williams (Spring Hill, Kan.-Gardner Edgerton-Fort Scott C.C.).
