AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan women's track and field team once again crowned an individual champion at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the meet's final day of competition, May 11. Senior Asia Rawls took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles, leading the Eagles to a fifth-place team finish of 82.50 points at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
Kent State University capped off the conference championship sweep. After winning the indoor title, Feb. 22-23, the Golden Flashes stood atop the team leaderboard at the conclusion of the outdoor meet with 169 points. The University of Akron finished in second with 119 points, while the University at Buffalo and Miami University took third and fourth with 109.50 and 105 points, respectively.
Rawls, last year's NCAA national qualifier, won her second MAC title in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line first in a personal-best time of 58.32. The fast time ranks second in program history as the team captain inches closer to the EMU record of 56.75 set by Chrystal Dooley in 2006. Rawls also claimed the conference crown in the 400-meter hurdles in 2011.
Fellow team captain Tatijana Jacobson finished runner-up in the high jump, tying her personal-best outdoor mark with a leap of 5-feet 8.75-inches (1.75 meters). The second-place jump gave the Eagles eight more points towards the team's total.
After winning a MAC championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase one day ago, Victoria Voronko added a pair on third-place finishes on Saturday. Voronko finished the 5,000-meter run in 16:44.70. The sophomore took the bronze in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:27.23, a personal-best and the sixth-best time in EMU history. Teammate Morgan Churchwell also added a career-record time of 4:29.49 for sixth place in the race as well as 10th in the EMU record books.
Both EMU relay teams finished in third place. The quartet of Morgan Yeadon, Asia Rawls, Danielle Clark and Aaliyah McKinney combined for a time of 3:42.53 in the 4x400-meter relay while Vanessa Clerveaux, Clark, McKinney and Yeadon raced the 4x100-meter relay in 45.73. Individually, Clerveaux grabbed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, stopping the watch at 13.78. McKinney's time of 11.90 in the 100-meter dash was enough for fifth place.
The Eagles will have two weeks off to rest and prepare for the NCAA Regionals, taking place in Greenboro, N.C., May 23-25.
