AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team completed day two of the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 10, with personal-records showing up all over the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex. With one day of competition remaining, the Eagles find themselves in fourth place with 39 points. However, an Eagle did capture the first individual title of the conference meet for the Green and White.
Redshirt freshman Daryl Smith flew past the competition in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, claiming the conference crown with a personal-record time of 9:02.86, nearly seven seconds ahead of his closest competitor. Smith's victory was the first MAC title of his career. He also becomes the first Eagle to win the event at the conference meet since David Brent won in 2010.
Freshman Anthony Jones started the Eagles off with a personal-best toss of 172-feet 8-inches (52.64 meters) in the hammer throw. Jones earned two points for the Green and White with his sixth-place mark. Eastern saw another sixth-place finish come from Travis Harris in the shot put with a toss of 52-feet 0-inches (15.85 meters).
After leaving the opposition at the halfway point of the decathlon, sophomore Solomon Ijah settled for the bronze in the 10-event competition. Nonetheless, Ijah moved up the charts in EMU laurels as his 7,092 points are the third-best in program history.
Hurdler Darrell Butler has been improving his times throughout the season and continued to do so in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries. Butler posted the second-fastest time of 14.13, a new personal-record, to qualify for Saturday's finals. Butler also earned a spot in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles alongside teammate Jeff Elam.
A trio of Eagles qualified for the 100-meter dash finals. Jay Saunders, Chris Scott and Cameron Bolton all raced the fastest times of their careers, crossing the line in 10.56, 10.67 and 10.74, respectively. Saunders and Bolton, along with freshman Matthew Williams, also qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash. Bolton led the Eagles in the preliminary races with a time of 21.42 before capping off his day with a spot in the 400-meter dash finals. Fellow Eagles Williams and Jason Ervin also earned places in the 400-meter dash finals.
Team captain Josh George, last year's MAC Champion in the 800-meter run, made the finals of this year's race with a time of 1:53.23.
Two-sport athlete Ryan Brumfield just missed out on getting points for Eastern, finishing ninth in the long jump with a career-best leap of 22-feet 9-inches (6.93 meters).
With all of the qualifiers for tomorrow's finals, the Eagles still have a shot to catch first-place Akron, who leads with 73 points through two days. Kent State and Miami follow behind the Zips with 50 and 48 points, respectively.
The MAC Outdoor Championships will begin its final day of competition tomorrow at noon with the men's high jump.
