Women's Tennis Looks to Get back to .500 In MAC Play

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will host the Huskies from Northern Illinois University, weather permitting at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex Saturday, April 13. If needed, play will be moved back inside to the Chippewa Club. Play will commence at 1 p.m.
EMU enters the weekend with a record of 7-12 (2-3 MAC) following a 5-2 victory at Ball State, April 6, in Muncie, Ind. The Huskies are 14-6 (0-4 MAC) and are still in search of their first league victory after falling to Western Michigan, 6-1, in DeKalb, Ill., March 30. NIU will play at Toledo, April 12, before making the trek north up US-23.
Last year, EMU won all three doubles matches and added four singles wins to record a 5-2 win over Northern Illinois, April 6, 2012, on the NIU West Tennis Courts. The No. 1 doubles team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke captured an 8-3 win over NIU's Sara McLaughlin and Emily Rogers. The EMU No. 2 team of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr bested Northern's Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre, 8-5, and the No. 3 team of Daphne Friedrichs and Marcela Rivero posted an 8-6 win over the NIU team of Stephanie McDonald and Haley Dekkinga.
Mebuke won her No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-3, over McLaughlin before Northern won the No. 2 and No. 3 singles contests. The Eagles then bounced back with three straight wins as Friedrics defeated Mary Malkin, 6-4, 6-5, at No. 4; Toncheva won, 6-4, 6-3 over De La Torre at No. 5 and Rivero won, 6-2, 6-0, over McDonald at No. 6.
Eastern Michigan will be home twice more against Buffalo, April 19, and Akron, April 20, before entering postseason action the 2013 MAC Tournament, April 25-28, in Muncie, Ind.
