EMU wins all but one match on the afternoon at the Chippewa Club
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and added five singles wins to record a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois University here Saturday, April 13, on the indoor courts at the Chippewa Club.
Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eagles are now 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play and 8-12 overall. NIU falls to 14-8 overall and 0-6 in league play.
"We got a solid win today," said Ray. "We did not play our best at times, and NIU brought alot of passion to the court. The bottom line is we got a solid win, and we move on to a big weekend at home next weekend against Buffalo and Akron. This will decide a lot for us regarding the MAC Tournament in 2 weeks. I feel good about how we are playing these last two weeks, and we need to keep that momentum going."
The No. 1 doubles team of Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova captured an 8-1 win over NIU's Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre. The EMU No. 2 team of Ankita Bhatia and Mariya Toncheva bested Northern's Stephanie McDonald and Haley Dekkinga, 8-7 (7-4), and the No. 3 team of Daphne Friedrichs and Zsofia Biro posted an 8-2 win over the NIU team of Cristina Alvarez and Mary Malkin.
Supejova battled back to win her No. 1 singles match, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8), over Youel. Mebuke cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Dekkinga before Northern won the No. 3 singles contests.
